Therefore, forests are an example of a socioecological system. While affecting forests, humans are also dependent on ecosystem services provided by them. The challenges facing the sustainability of the forest sector jeopardize the forests’ ability to provide these ecosystem services. All this could be resulting from socioecological mismatches in forestry. A socioecological mismatch occurs, when the ecological scale of an ecosystem does not align with the social scale of its’ management. These mismatches can weaken the resilience of an ecosystem and thus endanger the ecosystem services provided by them. Therefore, it is crucial to identify these mismatches in Finnish forestry. This systematic literature review searches the literature for references to socioecological mismatches in Finnish forestry. It is also interested in whether these kinds of mismatches have been identified in this context before using the theory of socioecological mismatches. The review uses two case examples: the Willow tit as an indicator of reducing biodiversity in Finland, and Spruce bark beetle outbreaks in Finland. The term and theory of socioecological mismatch had not been used concerning Finnish forestry before, even though some inconsistencies between the ecology and governance of Finnish forests had been identified. Based on the literature this study found multiple references to socioecological mismatches concerning both case examples. There was evidence of spatial, temporal and functional socioecological mismatches. Solving them is not easy, but many sources suggest taking a more multidisciplinary approach into forestry to improve the sustainability of our forest management. The theory of socioecological mismatches offers a new perspective to the sustainability of forest management, and some new terminology to discuss potentially familiar phenomena. It can also serve as an important tool in maintaining a resilient ecosystem.
dc.description.abstract
Metsät voidaan nähdä sosioekologisina systeemeinä ─ niissä luonnon omat prosessit ja ihmisen toiminta ovat jatkuvassa vuorovaikutuksessa.
