The goal \nof this survey is to clarify how much cross-country skiing does physical education contain and \nwhat factors are affecting the count. As well as the target is to sort out what subject matters \ndoes the cross-country skiing lessons involve and do they geographically vary. The third point \nis to understand what are the goals that teachers try to reach with teaching cross-country skiing. \nThe target group is the physical education teachers teaching in Finland, the members of the \nassociation of Finnish physical education teachers, to be exact (N=1335). The number of \nanswers was 142. \nLocomotion in nature, especially on the snow has been a lifeline in the history of the northern \npeople. Cross-country skiing has a significant history in the everyday life as well as in the \nFinnish wars and as an influencer of the public health. About a hundred years ago the Finns \nfaced a unique enthusiasm for cross-country skiing as literally everyone was skiing up here. \nThis phenomenon brought cross-country skiing into the Finnish education system, to schools. \nOnly by understanding the nowadays it is possible to affect the future, sustainably. The research \nmaterial was collected with an electric questionnaire and the material was analysed with \nquantitative research methods, such as SPSS-program. The main analysis methods are \ncrosstabulation, Pearson correlation coefficient and one-way ANOVA. \nThe survey shows that cross-country skiing yet actively is a part of the Finnish physical \neducation in primary school. There is a correlation between the geographical location of the \nschool and the amount of cross-country skiing lessons. However, the teachers\u00b4 age does not \nhave a statistically significant correlation. The amount of cross-country skiing is positively \naffected by the location of the ski trail and the self-experienced professional competence to \nteaching the sport. The most negative effects are the condition of the equipment and the \nstudents\u00b4 desires for the contents of physical education. The cross-country skiing lessons \ninvolve the basic skills of movement with skis as well as playing games. However, the main \nsubject matters are ski runs alone and technique practice. With time, the goals for teaching \nNordic teaching have modified to more individually rather than socially serving. \nThe clearance of this topic is current, because of the critical years and decades the sport is \nliving, not least because of the climate and other resources. The culture of cross-country skiing \nmust be consciously protected in order to maintain its position and value as a serious winter \nsport. Fitness skiing is living its golden years, whilst the number of competitive skiers is \nconsistently decreasing. By paying attention to the teaching of cross-country skiing in schools \nwe may increase the number of skiers in ski clubs as well. There is no such scientific research \nhandling cross-country skiing, especially in school context. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena \non selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 peruskoulun hiihto-opetuksen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4 ja siihen vaikuttavia tekij\u00f6it\u00e4, opetuksen \nsis\u00e4lt\u00f6j\u00e4 sek\u00e4 tavoitteita, joita hiihto-opetuksella pyrit\u00e4\u00e4n edist\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n. Tutkittavana \nkohdejoukkona toimii Suomessa opettavat liikunnanopettajat, tarkemmin Liikunnan- ja \nTerveystiedon Opettajat ry:n liikunnanopettajaj\u00e4senet (N=1335), otoksen ollessa 142 vastaajaa. \nLuonnossa, talvisin lumella liikkuminen on ollut el\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4 mahdollistava ja yll\u00e4pit\u00e4v\u00e4 taito \npohjoisen ihmisten historiassa. Lajilla on kansallisesti merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4 historia niin arjessa, sodissa \nkuin kansanterveydellisestikin. Noin sata vuotta sitten kansaamme kohdannut niin kutsuttu \nlatuhurmion aika toi hiihdon lopulta my\u00f6s kouluun, alun perin maanpuolustuksellisin tavoittein. \nOn t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4 ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4\u00e4, millaista toimintaa lajin yll\u00e4pit\u00e4miseksi ja s\u00e4ilytt\u00e4miseksi j\u00e4rjestet\u00e4\u00e4n. \nN\u00e4in voidaan yll\u00e4pit\u00e4\u00e4 ja kehitt\u00e4\u00e4 lumilajien, kuin my\u00f6s hiihdon asemaa ja mahdollisuuksia \ntulevaisuudessa kest\u00e4v\u00e4sti. Koulun t\u00e4m\u00e4n p\u00e4iv\u00e4n hiihto-opetusta tutkittiin s\u00e4hk\u00f6isell\u00e4 \nWebropol-kyselylomakkeella ja aineisto analysoitiin m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4llisin tutkimusmenetelmin SPSS\nohjelmalla, hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4en Pearsonin korrelaatiokerrointa, 1-suuntaista varianssianalyysi\u00e4, \nristiintaulukointia ja perustunnuslukujen analysointia. \nTutkimus osoittaa, ett\u00e4 laji kuuluu yh\u00e4 liikunnanopetuksen sis\u00e4lt\u00f6ihin ymp\u00e4ri maan. Koulun \nmaantieteellisell\u00e4 sijainnilla on yhteyksi\u00e4 hiihto-opetuksen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4n, mutta opettajan i\u00e4ll\u00e4 ei \ntilastollista merkitsevyytt\u00e4 hiihtotuntien m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4n. Eniten hiihtoa opetetaan It\u00e4- ja Pohjois\nSuomessa, v\u00e4hiten rannikkoalueilla. Voimakkaimmin m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4 lis\u00e4\u00e4 hiihtopaikan sijainti ja oma \nammatillinen valmius sen opettamiseen. Eniten m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4 v\u00e4hent\u00e4\u00e4 v\u00e4lineiden kunto ja oppilaiden \ntoiveet liikunnanopetuksen sis\u00e4ll\u00f6ist\u00e4. Opetuksen sis\u00e4ll\u00f6t vaihtelevat suksilla liikkumisen \nperustaidoista suksileikkeihin, painottuen vahvasti lenkkeilyyn ja tekniikkaharjoitteluun. \nHiihto-opetuksen tavoitteet ovat muovautuneet nykyp\u00e4iv\u00e4\u00e4n kohdistuen voimakkaammin \nyksil\u00f6\u00f6n, entisten yhteiskunnallisempien tavoitteiden sijaan. \nAiheen selvitysty\u00f6 on ajankohtainen, sill\u00e4 laji nauttii kansallista arvoa ja suosiota, mutta el\u00e4\u00e4 \nsamalla muun muassa ilmastosyist\u00e4 kriittisi\u00e4 vuosikymmeni\u00e4. Hiihtokulttuuria on suojeltava \ntietoisesti, jos sen asema ja arvo halutaan s\u00e4ilytt\u00e4\u00e4. Kuntohiihto el\u00e4\u00e4 kultavuosiaan, samalla kun \nkilpahiiht\u00e4jien m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 on roimasti v\u00e4hentynyt. Kiinnitt\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 huomiota muun muassa koulujen \nhiihto-opetuksen sis\u00e4lt\u00f6ihin voidaan kouluhiihdosta saada entist\u00e4 innostavampaa ja \nmielekk\u00e4\u00e4mp\u00e4\u00e4, kenties innostaa uusia harrastajia lajin pariin. Tieteellist\u00e4 tutkimusta \nkouluhiihdosta ja muutoinkin suomalaisesta hiihdosta ei k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6ss\u00e4 ole, varsinkaan \najankohtaista sellaista.
