Hoitoon liittyy myös huonoja puolia. Suurin ongelma liittyy seoksiin, joilla boori saadaan kasvaimeen. Booriseoksen tulee täyttää tiettyjä vaatimuksia, mutta vielä ei ole löydetty täydellisesti niitä kaikkia samanaikaisesti täyttäviä seoksia. Lisäksi ongelmana on hoitoon liittyvät dosimetrian laskut, koska ne ovat monen säteilylähteen takia monimutkaisia ja aikaa vieviä. Muun muassa näiden ongelmien takia hoito on vielä kehitysvaiheessa eikä se ole yleistynyt käytetyimmäksi sädehoidoksi. Tämä tutkielma käy läpi kiihdytinpohjaisen boorineutronikaappaushoidon toimintaperiaatetta, hoitoon liittyvää dosimetriaa sekä hoidon hyviä ja huonoja puolia. Tutkielman alussa käsitellään myös nopeasti säteilyn biologisia vaikutuksia. The particles generated from the reaction lose most of their energy in the tumor area, causing the tumor to be destroyed. Boron neutron capture therapy is considered a good form of radiation therapy, because in it the radiation dose is mostly formed in the tumor and at the same time the dose of the normal, healthy tissue remains very low. There are also downsides to the treatment. The biggest problem is related to the compounds used to get boron into the tumor. The boron compound must meet certain requirements, but no compound has yet been found that would perfectly meet all of them simultaneously. In addition, there is a problem with the treatment-related dosimetry calculations, because they are very complicated and time-consuming due to the many radiation sources. Among other things, due to these problems, the treatment is still in the development phase and it has not become the most widely used radiation therapy. This thesis reviews the operating principle of accelerator-based boron neutron capture therapy, the dosimetry related to the treatment and the pros and cons of the treatment. At the beginning of the thesis, the biological effects of radiation are also discussed shortly. In addition, based on studies carried out in different countries, radiation doses received during the treatment and possible side effects of the treatment are discussed.
