North \nAmerican signal crayfish is classified as invasive species in Finland, due to it being a carrier \nof crayfish plague, which causes increased mortality rates in noble crayfish populations.\nSignal and noble crayfish are supposed to have very similar niches, but there is no certainty, \nthat their ecosystem effects are similar. Previous studies suggest that compared to noble \ncrayfish, signal crayfish have greater effects on the benthic macroinvertebrate prey \nassemblages, especially on their species diversity. Chironomid larvae are the most common \nand maybe the most significant group of benthic invertebrates in lakes. However, the effects \nof crayfish on chironomid community are poorly known. The aim of this study was to \ninvestigate the effects of the two crayfish species on chironomid abundance, community \ndiversity and composition in the shallow littoral zone of lakes. The second aim was to\ninvestigate if there is any difference between the impact of signal and noble crayfish. The \nexpectations were that the chironomid larval abundance (number of individuals) and \ndiversity (taxon richness, Shannon diversity and evenness) reduce and community \ncomposition changes in crayfish lakes compared to control lakes with no crayfish and that \nthe impacts are greater for signal crayfish than for noble crayfish. The effects of crayfish were \nstudied in Southern and Central Finland in 24 lakes divided into 3 different categories: 8 \nsignal crayfish lakes, 8 noble crayfish lakes and 8 lakes with no crayfish. Three stony littoral\nsites were chosen from each lake, where semiquantitative samples of macroinvertebrates \nwere taken from shallow depth (0,5\u20131m) using a hand net. Chironomid larvae were\nidentified to genera and counted. In contrast to expectations, signal or noble crayfish did not \nhave any effects on chironomid abundance, diversity or assemblages in the littoral zone. The \ncrayfish populations were perhaps too small to significantly affect the chironomid \ncommunity. T\u00e4pl\u00e4rapu ja\nalkuper\u00e4inen jokirapu on arvioitu ekolokerojen perusteella hyvin samankaltaisiksi, mutta ei \nole varmuutta poikkeaako t\u00e4pl\u00e4rapu ekosysteemivaikutuksiltaan jokiravusta. Surviaiss\u00e4\u00e4skien toukat ovat \nrunsain ja ehk\u00e4 merkitt\u00e4vin pohjael\u00e4inryhm\u00e4 j\u00e4rviss\u00e4, mutta rapujen vaikutuksesta \nsurviaiss\u00e4\u00e4skiyhteis\u00f6n rakenteeseen tiedet\u00e4\u00e4n hyvin v\u00e4h\u00e4n. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli \nselvitt\u00e4\u00e4, onko ravuilla vaikutusta surviaiss\u00e4\u00e4skien runsauteen, monimuotoisuuteen ja \nyhteis\u00f6koostumukseen j\u00e4rvien litoraalivy\u00f6hykkeell\u00e4 ja onko t\u00e4pl\u00e4ravun ja jokiravun \nvaikutuksissa eroja. Odotuksena oli, ett\u00e4 surviaiss\u00e4\u00e4skien runsaus (yksil\u00f6m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4) ja \nmonimuotoisuus (taksoniluku, Shannonin diversiteetti-indeksi ja tasaisuus) v\u00e4henev\u00e4t \nravullisissa j\u00e4rviss\u00e4 ja yhteis\u00f6koostumus muuttuu verrattuna ravuttomiin kontrollij\u00e4rviin ja \nett\u00e4 t\u00e4pl\u00e4ravun vaikutus on voimakkaampi kuin jokiravun. Ty\u00f6ss\u00e4 tutkittiin Etel\u00e4- ja Keski-Suomessa 24 j\u00e4rve\u00e4, jotka jakautuivat rapukantojen perusteella kolmeen ryhm\u00e4\u00e4n: 8 \nt\u00e4pl\u00e4ravullista, 8 jokiravullista ja 8 ravutonta j\u00e4rve\u00e4. Jokaisesta j\u00e4rvest\u00e4 valittiin 3 kivikkoista\nrantapaikkaa, joista ker\u00e4ttiin semikvantitatiiviset pohjael\u00e4inn\u00e4ytteet potkuhaavilla \nmatalasta rannasta (syvyys 0,5\u20131 m). Surviaiss\u00e4\u00e4sken toukat tunnistettiin sukuihin ja \njokaisen j\u00e4rven kokonaisyksil\u00f6m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4t laskettiin. Tulosten mukaan ravuilla ei odotusten \nvastaisesti ollut vaikutuksia surviaiss\u00e4\u00e4skien runsauteen, tai yhteis\u00f6jen monimuotoisuuteen\ntai koostumukseen.
