Kirjallisuuden mukaan toiminnallinen opetus k\u00e4sitt\u00e4\u00e4 laajan joukon opetusmenetelmi\u00e4, joissa oppijan aktiivinen osallisuus sek\u00e4 vuorovaikutus t\u00e4m\u00e4n ja ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n kanssa n\u00e4hd\u00e4\u00e4n merkitt\u00e4vin\u00e4 oppimiseen vaikuttavina tekij\u00f6in\u00e4. Toisaalta eteenkin osa suomalaisesta kirjallisuudesta m\u00e4\u00e4rittelee toiminnallisen opetuksen sis\u00e4lt\u00e4v\u00e4n fyysist\u00e4 aktiivisuutta, joskus ohittaen oppijan osallisuuden t\u00e4rkeyden. (ks. esim. Leskinen, Jaakkola & Norrena, 2016.) Koska POPS (2014) ei varsinaisesti tarjoa toiminnalliselle opetukselle m\u00e4\u00e4ritelm\u00e4\u00e4, mutta vaatii toiminnallisten menetelmien k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00e4 opetuksessa, opettajien tulkintoja toiminnallisesta englannin kielenopetuksesta tarvitaan.\n\nT\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tavoitteena olikin selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 opettajien n\u00e4kemyksi\u00e4 toiminnallisesta englannin kielenopetuksesta suomalaisissa yl\u00e4kouluissa. Tutkimukseen osallistui yhteens\u00e4 27 opettajaa, joista 26 vastasi kyselylomakkeeseen, yksi osallistui haastatteluun ja yksi osallistui molempiin menetelmiin. Aineistonkeruu suoritettiin s\u00e4hk\u00f6isesti tammi\u2013helmikuussa 2024. Tutkimuksen tulosten mukaan yl\u00e4koulujen englannin kielenopettajat m\u00e4\u00e4rittelev\u00e4t toiminnallisen kieltenopetuksen monella tavalla, kun osa mielt\u00e4\u00e4 fyysisen aktiivisuuden vahvasti osaksi menetelm\u00e4\u00e4 (ks. esim. Leskinen, Jaakkola & Norrena, 2016), ja toiset keskittyv\u00e4t oppijan aktiiviseen rooliin. (ks. esim. van Lier, 2007.) T\u00e4m\u00e4 tulos osoittaakin, ett\u00e4 toiminnallinen opetus tulisi m\u00e4\u00e4ritell\u00e4 tarkemmin POPS:ssa (2014.)\n\nTutkimuksen osallistujat my\u00f6s raportoivat k\u00e4ytt\u00e4v\u00e4ns\u00e4 toiminnallisia menetelmi\u00e4 osana opetustaan s\u00e4\u00e4nn\u00f6llisesti ja uskoivat niiden mahdollistavan oppimisen laajalle joukolle oppijoita. Oppimisen mahdollistamisen lis\u00e4ksi hy\u00f6tyin\u00e4 n\u00e4htiin esimerkiksi oppimisen hauskuus ja yhdess\u00e4 tekeminen. Haasteina ja rajoituksina sen sijaan kerrottiin olevan muun muassa oppilaiden levottomuus ja vaikea k\u00e4yt\u00f6s sek\u00e4 ajan- ja tilojenpuute. Niist\u00e4 huolimatta opettajat suhtautuivat varsin positiivisesti toiminnalliseen englannin kielenopetukseen. Tulokset osoittavat, ett\u00e4 toiminnalliseen opetukseen tulisi tarjota opettajille enemm\u00e4n lis\u00e4koulutusta ja -materiaaleja jo opettajakoulutuksesta l\u00e4htien.
