S\u00e4\u00e4nn\u00f6llisen voimaharjoittelun my\u00f6t\u00e4 elimist\u00f6ss\u00e4 tapahtuu niin hermostollisia\nkuin rakenteellisiakin muutoksia, jotka selitt\u00e4v\u00e4t lihasvoiman ja lihaksen kasvua. Ravitsemus\nniin ik\u00e4\u00e4n tukee ihmisen terveytt\u00e4 ja hyvinvointia. Sen lis\u00e4ksi sill\u00e4 on vaikutusta s\u00e4\u00e4nn\u00f6llisen\nvoimaharjoittelun seurauksena ilmentyviin adaptaatioihin. Yksil\u00f6lliset eroavaisuudet\nvoimaharjoittelun adaptaatioissa voivat olla suuria, mutta k\u00e4sityst\u00e4 n\u00e4ihin vaikuttavista\ntekij\u00f6ist\u00e4 ei juuri ole. Tutkimuksen tarkoitus on selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 ravitsemuksen vaikutuksia\nmaksimivoiman ja lihaksen poikkipinta-alan muutoksiin ja tarkastella, selitt\u00e4v\u00e4tk\u00f6\nravitsemukselliset tekij\u00e4t yksil\u00f6iden v\u00e4lisi\u00e4 eroja adaptaatioissa.\nTutkimus koostui 12 viikon voimaharjoittelujaksosta sek\u00e4 alku- ja loppumittauksista.\nTutkittavat (n = 174) olivat i\u00e4lt\u00e4\u00e4n 36 \u00b1 6,4-vuotiaita, eik\u00e4 heill\u00e4 ollut aiempaa kokemusta\nsystemaattisesta voimaharjoittelusta. Tutkimuksessa mitattiin horisontaalisen jalkapr\u00e4ssin\nyhden toiston maksimi (1 RM) ja vastus lateralis -lihaksen poikkipinta-ala (VL CSA)\nultra\u00e4\u00e4nell\u00e4 alku- ja loppumittauksissa. Ravitsemuksellisia muuttujia tarkasteltiin viiden eri\nkyselyn avulla sek\u00e4 energiansaantia kehon painon muutoksella.\nVL CSA ja 1 RM kasvoivat tilastollisesti merkitsev\u00e4sti keskim\u00e4\u00e4rin 13,7 \u00b1 5,0 % (p < 0,001)\nja 19,2 \u00b1 9.4 % (p < 0,001). Ravitsemuksellisista muuttujista mik\u00e4\u00e4n muuttuja ei ollut\nyhteydess\u00e4 1 RM muutokseen, poikkeuksena naiset, joilla korkeampi pistem\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 EDE-Q\nsy\u00f6misen rajoittaminen -osiosta yhdistyi pienemp\u00e4\u00e4n 1 RM:n muutokseen (r = -0,210,\np = 0,025). With regular resistance training, both neural and structural changes occur, which\nexplain the increase in muscle strength and muscle growth. Nutrition as well supports human\nhealth and well-being. It also has a significant impact on the adaptations that occur as a result\nof regular resistance training. Individual differences in resistance training adaptations can be\nlarge, but there is little understanding of the factors that influence these differences. The aim of\nthis study is to investigate the effects of nutrition on changes in muscle strength and muscle\ncross-sectional area and to examine whether nutritional factors explain the differences in\ninterindividual adaptations.\nThe study consisted of a 12-week resistance training period and pre and post measurements.\nParticipants (n = 174) were aged 36 \u00b1 6.4 years with no previous experience of systematic\nresistance training. One repetition maximum (1 RM) of the horizontal leg press and the vastus\nlateralis muscle cross-sectional area (VL CSA) by ultrasound was measured pre and post.\nNutritional variables were assessed using five different questionnaires.\nOn average, the VL CSA increased by a 13.7 \u00b1 5.0 % (p < 0.001) in the whole study group. The\n1 RM increased by an average of 19.2 \u00b1 9.4 % (p < 0.001). None of the nutritional variables\nwas found to be associated with the change in 1 RM, except for the EDE-Q eating restriction\nscoring section in women (r = -0.210, p = 0.025). Changes in VL CSA correlated with vegetable\nintake frequency (r = -0.213, p = 0.006) and health diet index (r = -0.211, p = 0.006). The\ndivision of participants into three groups according to the relative change in VL CSA showed\nthat the high-responders had lower frequency of vegetable intake than the low- and moderateresponders (p = 0.013). Also, positive correlation between body weight change, 1 RM\n(r = 0.166, p = 0.029) and VL CSA (r = 0.399, p < 0.001) were observed. In addition, differences\nin body weight change were also observed between the groups (VL CSA), while moderate and\nhigh-responders gained weight whereas the low-responders did not (p < 0.001).\nIn untrained young and middle-aged adults, the effect of nutritional factors on changes in\nmuscle strength or muscle CSA early in the resistance training period is small. However, the\ninterindividual variability in the change in 1 RM and VL CSA was large. Nutritional factors did\nnot differ between low-, moderate- and high-responders, except the vegetable intake and body\nweight change. Thus, changes in adaptations to resistance training early in the training cycle\nseem to be largely explained by factors other than nutrition. The associations found in this study\nbetween frequency of vegetable intake, health diet index and body weight change with change\nin VL CSA were weak and should be viewed with caution but may suggest that too high amount\nof low energy density food may decrease muscle hypertrophy adaptations.
