Lisäksi moottorikelkkailun vaikutus suoekosysteemiin voi ilmentyä suon rakenteen ja toiminnan muuttumisena. Tämä voi näkyä muun muassa nevaisuuden lisääntymisenä, rämemättäiden painumisena ja vaurioina korkeaan varpukasvillisuuteen. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää, millaisia vaikutuksia moottorikelkkailulla on suokasvillisuuteen, miten moottorikelkkailu vaikuttaa suokasvien lajimäärään sekä kasviyhteisön lajikoostumukseen ja onko lumen pakkautumisella vaikutuksia suokasvillisuuden lajilukumäärään. Tutkimus suoritettiin kaksivaiheisena maastokokeena. Se toteutettiin viidellä suolla, jotka sijaitsevat Keski-Suomen alueella tai sen välittömässä läheisyydessä. Ensimmäisen vaiheen mittaukset tehtiin talvella mittaamalla jokaisella suolla lumen syvyyttä sekä tiheyttä ja kelkkauran leveyttä. Soille tehtiin kolmella mittauspisteellä kolme uran suhteen kohtisuoraa linjaa, joista lumimittaukset tehtiin. Toisessa vaiheessa kesällä soilta määritettiin samoilta moottorikelkkauralta lähteviltä linjoilta kasvilajit, niiden lukumäärä sekä runsaussuhteet, joita verrattiin myöhemmin kontrollialueiden häiritsemättömiin koealoihin. Data käsiteltiin Excelillä ja tilastolliset testit ajettiin SPSS- ohjelmistolla. Tuloksena saatiin selville, että nevat kärsivät sarojen peittävyyden osalta moottorikelkka-ajelusta rämeitä enemmän, kun taas rämeillä varpujen peittävyys väheni uran alla. Lisäksi lajikoostumus muuttui ja lumen syvyys vaikutti lajilukumäärään. Lumen pakkautumisen negatiivisista vaikutuksista saatiin viitteitä. Kaikilla soilla moottorikelkkaura oli nähtävissä ja kasvillisuus sen alla oli joko vaurioitunutta tai jopa kuollutta, vaikka tilastollisissa testeissä ei suuria eroja kasvillisuuden peittävyyden osalta saatukaan. Uralla oli paikoitellen myös täysin sammalettomia kohtia, joita ei kontrollialueilla ollut. Johtopäätöksenä voidaan todeta, että moottorikelkkailulla on negatiivisia vaikutuksia suokasvillisuuteen häiriöalueella eli kelkkauralla ja sen välittömässä läheisyydessä. Snowmobiling is a common winter sports in Finland. Snowmobiling is allowed in designated routes and trails and the establishment of the routes require a specific permit. However, snowmobiles are heavy, so the snow compacts under the sled causing the snow cover to thin and the sled can damage vegetation that would otherwise have been sheltered under the snow. Additionally, snowmobiling on peatland ecosystems can change in the structure and function of the peatland. This can be observed, among other things, as a decrease in the aerated strata, the sinking of the pine mire tussocks and damage to the dwarf shrub vegetation. The aim of this research was to investigate what kind of effects snowmobiling has on peatland vegetation, how snowmobiling affects the number of species of peatland plants and the species composition of the plant community and has the compaction of the now any impact on the number of species in peatlands. The research was executed as a two-phase field test. It was conducted in five peatlands located in Central Finland or in its immediate vicinity. The measurements in the first phase were made in winter and the snow depth, density and the width of the trail were measured in every peatland. On the peatlands three lines were made perpendicular to the trail, from which the snow measurements were made in three different measurement spots. In the second phase, in summer, the vegetation was analyzed in the same spots where winter measurements had been conducted. Plant species, their number and abundance ratios were measured and compared later to the undisturbed control areas. The data was processed by Excel and statistical tests were run by SPSS software program. As a result, it was found out, snowmobiling reduces the coverage of Carex-vegetation in tall sedge fens, whereas the dwarf shrub cover reduces in the dwarf shrub pine bogs. Also, the depth of the snow had an impact to the amount of the species and the species composition changed. There were some references of negative impact to peatland vegetation that was caused by snow compaction. In every peatland the snowmobile trail was visible to the bare eye and the vegetation under it was either damaged or even dead, though there was not so much statistical evidence to prove the differences between the vegetation coverage. On the trail, there were also completely open moss-free spots, that weren’t present in the control area. In conclusion, it can be stated that snowmobiling has negative effects on peatland vegetation in the disturbed area.
