T\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin v\u00e4hemm\u00e4n tunnettua ilmi\u00f6t\u00e4, jossa n\u00e4ille yhdisteille altistuneilla kirjolohen alkiopoikasilla suu ei sulkeudu yht\u00e4 hyvin kuin kontrollipoikasilla, sek\u00e4 muutoksen yhteytt\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4n alueen ruston kehitykseen. Poikasia altistettiin PHE:lle ja FLA:lle eri pitoisuuksissa, sek\u00e4 reteenille (RET), PAH-yhdisteelle, jonka tiedet\u00e4\u00e4n aiheuttavan p\u00e4\u00e4nalueen ep\u00e4muodostumia. In this MSc research project, the aim was to study a less-known effect, an impairment of mouth closure, and its relation to cartilage structure in rainbow trout yolk sac larvae. Larvae were exposed to several concentrations of PHE and FLA, and to retene (RET), a PAH-compound known to produce craniofacial malformations. Jaw movements were filmed and the smallest observable mouth gape measured from still images. For cartilage examination, some larvae were fixed and the cartilage structures stained using Alcian blue. According to results, one day of exposure increased the average of the mouth gape minimum (MGmin) of groups exposed to 100 or 200 \u03bcg/l FLA or 180 \u03bcg/l PHE. After five days of recovery in clean water, statistically significant differences between these groups and control were no longer present. Cartilage analysis revealed no clear changes in the lateral chondrocrania of individuals exposed to 180 \u03bcg/l PHE or 200 \u03bcg/l FLA (1010 and 990 nM respectively) for six days compared to control. In turn, exposure to 320 \u03bcg/l (1370 nM) of retene was found to impede chondrocranium development, which included the reduction of the Meckel\u2019s cartilage of the lower jaw compared to larvae length. The cartilage normalised jaw distance values (CNJD) of the MGmin obtained for six days of exposure showed that 320 \u03bcg/l RET also negatively affected mouth closure, although less than 180 \u03bcg/l PHE or 200 \u03bcg/l FLA, from which FLA remained more potent. These results indicate that freshly-hatched rainbow trout larvae may recover from a jaw-closure impediment observed after a brief exposure to high concentrations of PHE or FLA, and that this impediment is not due to a retene-like disruption of chondrocranium development.
