Transfer in Finnish EFL learners’ pronunciation of alveolar and post-alveolar fricatives and affricates

Suomalaiset puhuvat englantia yleisesti ottaen hyvin. Suomalaisten puhumaa englantia kuitenkin varjostaa rallienglantina tunnettu aksentti, jonka muodostaa pitkälti suomen kielen äänteiden, etenkin konsonanttien, siirtäminen englannin kieleen. Tämä siirtovaikutuksena tunnettu ilmiö saattaa vaikuttaa...

description Suomalaiset puhuvat englantia yleisesti ottaen hyvin. Finns speak English generally well. The English spoken by Finns is however shadowed by an accent known as Rally English, which is largely formed by the use of Finnish language phonemes, particularly consonants, in the spoken English. This phenomenon known as transfer may impact not only how comprehensible the English spoken by Finns is, but also how Finland and Finns are perceived internationally. The aim of this study was to investigate which English language consonants are particularly challenging for Finnish EFL learners and which phonemes Finns use in their stead. The study focused on those fricatives and affricates that are not present in Finnish but have a significant role in English. The participants were 14 7th-grade students, who read out loud an English text passage written by the researcher. The recordings revealed similar results as earlier studies: voiced postalveolar consonants, that is the fricative /ʒ/ as well as the affricate /dʒ/, proved to be the most difficult phonemes. While some students pronounced the voiced consonants 'correctly', as in similarly to native English speakers, while others replaced them with voiceless equivalents or the /s/ and /ts/ phonemes used in Finnish. In some cases, the student used the 'correct' phoneme in one word, but later replaced it with another. The results imply that not all pronunciation errors are caused by the incapability to produce certain phonemes but by the uncertainty or lack of knowledge about which phoneme to use in each context. Thus, a diverse, auditive input of vocabulary can be seen as a vital part of pronunciation teaching.
