Various mentoring programs have been implemented during social and health education to support the professional development of students. In previous research, the point of views of the mentors and dyadic mentoring were emphasized. In addi-tion, medical and nursing educations were overrepresented when compared to the fields of rehabilitation. The purpose of this study was to increase understanding about the meaning of small group mentoring in professional development and preparation for working life from the perspective of physiotherapy students.

I conducted the study as a qualitative interview study combining a phenomenology herme-neutic approach with reflexive thematic analysis. The study involved a total of four phy-siotherapy students from three Universities of Applied Sciences from different parts of Fin-land. The participants’ experiences represented the content of three different small groups and they were at different stages of their education during the study. I collected the material through individual online interviews using Zoom in September-October 2022. After verbatim transcription I analysed the material using reflexive thematic analysis method according to Braun and Clarke. The results of the study represent the participants’ experiences of the phe-nomenon under study at the collective level.

Physiotherapy students’ experiences of small group mentoring consisted of two main themes, which were constructed from a total of four sub-themes. The first main theme: ’Small group work as a promoter of professional identity’ was composed of two sub-themes; 'discussions between group members as psychological support' and 'dialogue as a developer of professi-onal agency'. These described the importance of small group mentoring for participants as a place to practice being a professional and to get support. The second main theme: 'Mentoring as a supplement to the content of education' was made up of sub-themes: 'multi-perspective discussions as additional learning' and 'the flexibility of the mentoring program as an increase of motivation'. These reflected the students' experience of supplementing their pro-fessional knowledge along with the physiotherapy education.

The results of the study advocate increasing opportunities for physiotherapy students to have long-term discussions with physiotherapy professionals. Voluntary small group mentoring could be a potential option for this. These can be used to increase support for students’ professional development and preparation for working life. The results can be utilized when developing the physiotherapy education. In the future, more studies on the mentoring experiences of physiotherapy students are needed with larger participant numbers. In addition, with the increasing opportunities for mentoring-type of work in physiotherapy educations, the progress of students’ professional development could be evaluated with more objective research methods, such as evaluation forms or questionnaires.
dc.description.provenance
Made available in DSpace on 2023-08-18T05:30:08Z (GMT).
