T\u00e4m\u00e4n pro gradu \u2013tutkielman\ntarkoituksena on selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 matematiikka-ahdistuksen ja \u2013taitojen v\u00e4lisi\u00e4 yhteyksi\u00e4\nkakkosluokkalaisten keskuudessa sek\u00e4 suhteessa heid\u00e4n vanhempiinsa. Tutkimuksessa kartoitettiin\nlasten matematiikka-ahdistuksen ja \u2013taitojen v\u00e4list\u00e4 yhteytt\u00e4, lasten ja vanhempien matematiikkaahdistuksen ja sukupuolen merkityst\u00e4 t\u00e4ss\u00e4 yhteydess\u00e4 sek\u00e4 lasten ja vanhempien matematiikan\ntaitojen v\u00e4list\u00e4 yhteytt\u00e4. Tutkimus on osa Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n yliopiston EarlyMath-tutkimushanketta, jossa\ntutkitaan varhaisten matematiikan taitojen, motivaation sek\u00e4 tunteiden kehityst\u00e4.\n\nTutkimukseen osallistui 627 kakkosluokkalaista 47 keskisuomalaisesta koulusta, sek\u00e4 365\nheid\u00e4n vanhempaansa. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu sek\u00e4 lasten ett\u00e4 heid\u00e4n vanhempiensa\nmatematiikka-ahdistusta kartoittavista itsearviokyselyist\u00e4 sek\u00e4 matematiikan taitoja mittaavista\ntesteist\u00e4. Aineistonkeruu 2.-luokkalaisten lasten osalta suoritettiin kev\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 2022 luokissa\nryhm\u00e4testaustilanteiden muodossa. My\u00f6s vanhemmille j\u00e4rjestettiin ryhm\u00e4testauksia matematiikan\ntaitojen kartoittamiseksi, ja vanhempien aineistonkeruu valmistui syksyll\u00e4 2022. Vain osa\nvanhemmista (n = 283) osallistui matematiikan taitojen testaukseen testaustilanteiden rajallisten\nj\u00e4rjest\u00e4mismahdollisuuksien vuoksi.\n\nAineiston analyysimenetelm\u00e4n\u00e4 k\u00e4ytettiin korrelaatioanalyysi\u00e4 lapsen matematiikkaahdistuksen sek\u00e4 -taitojen yhteyden sek\u00e4 lapsen ja vanhemman matematiikan taitojen yhteyden\nselvitt\u00e4misess\u00e4. Lapsen ja vanhemman matematiikka-ahdistuksen yhteytt\u00e4 sek\u00e4 sukupuolen\nmerkityst\u00e4 yhteyden kannalta selvitettiin \u03c7\u00b2-testill\u00e4. Tulokset osoittivat, ett\u00e4 mit\u00e4 enemm\u00e4n lapsella\noli matematiikka-ahdistusta, sit\u00e4 heikommat matematiikan taidot h\u00e4nell\u00e4 oli. Lasten ja vanhempien\nmatematiikka-ahdistuksen v\u00e4lilt\u00e4 ei puolestaan l\u00f6ytynyt merkitsev\u00e4\u00e4 yhteytt\u00e4 riippumatta siit\u00e4, oliko\nlapsen ja vanhemman sukupuoli otettu huomioon vai ei. Lasten ja vanhempien matematiikan taidot\nolivat yhteydess\u00e4 siten, ett\u00e4 mit\u00e4 paremmat taidot vanhemmilla oli, sit\u00e4 parempia olivat my\u00f6s lasten\ntaidot.\n\nTutkimus tukee aiempia havaintoja lasten korkean matematiikka-ahdistuksen yhteydest\u00e4\nheikkoihin matematiikan taitoihin. Tutkimus osoitti my\u00f6s lapsen ja vanhemman matematiikan\ntaitojen ilment\u00e4v\u00e4n samansuuntaista yhteytt\u00e4. Tutkimus lis\u00e4\u00e4 my\u00f6s tietoa matematiikka-ahdistuksen\nilmi\u00f6st\u00e4 suomalaisessa kulttuurissa. T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tulosten perusteella voidaan p\u00e4\u00e4tell\u00e4, ett\u00e4\nisien ja \u00e4itien matematiikka-ahdistus ei siirry heid\u00e4n lapsilleen. In this master\u2019s thesis, the connection between\nmath anxiety and math skills was investigated among second graders and in relation to their parents.\nThis study investigated the connection between children\u2019s math anxiety and math skills, the\nconnection between children\u2019s and their parents\u2019 math anxiety and the effects of gender in that\ncontext, as well as the connection between children\u2019s and parents\u2019 math skills. The study is a part of\nthe EarlyMath \u2013project of the University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4, which focuses on the development of early\nmath skills, motivation and emotions.\n\n627 second graders from 47 schools in Central Finland participated in the study. The research\ndata includes both the children\u2019s and their parents\u2019 math anxiety self-assessment questionnaires and\ntests of math skills. The data collection of second graders was completed in the spring of 2022 in\ngroup testing situations. Parents\u2019 math skills were also tested in group testing situations, and the\nparents\u2019 data collection was completed in autumn 2022. Only part of the parents (n = 283) participated\nin the testing of math skills due to the limited possibilities of organising the testing situations.\n\nTo investigate the relation between child\u2019s math anxiety and math skills as well as to examine\nthe relation between the child\u2019s and the parent\u2019s math skills, correlation analysis was used as a data\nanalysis method. Moreover, \u03c7\u00b2-test was used to examine the connection between the child\u2019s and\nparent\u2019s math anxiety and the significance of gender in the connection. According to the results, there\nis a moderate negative correlation between child\u2019s math anxiety and math skills. However, the results\ndid not find a significant connection between children\u2019s and parents\u2019 math anxiety with or without\ntaking into account the gender of parents and children. Instead, a weak positive connection was found\nbetween the children\u2019s and parents\u2019 math skills.\n\nThis study supports the previous findings showing the negative correlation between math\nanxiety and math skills. The study also indicated that there is a parallel connection between children\u2019s\nand parents\u2019 math skills. This study increases the knowledge about math anxiety in Finnish primary\nschool. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that fathers\u2019 and mothers\u2019 math anxiety\ndoes not pass down to their children.
