Maailmassa on useita miljardeja pelaajia, videopelej\u00e4 on tarjolla miljoonittain. Flow henkisen\u00e4 tilana on laajalti tutkittu vuorovaikutus pelin ja pelaajan v\u00e4lill\u00e4 kyselylomakkeilla, jotka erottavat pelilflow- ja ei-peliflow-tilat toisistaan ep\u00e4varmasti. Tutkielman tarkoituksena oli lis\u00e4t\u00e4 ymm\u00e4rryst\u00e4 tilojen luonteesta ja erottamisesta visuaalisilla narratiiveilla. Kymmenen kokenutta videopelaajaa kuvasi peliflow- ja ei-peliflow-tilojaan visuaalisilla narratiiveilla, joita sovellettiin tiett\u00e4v\u00e4sti ensimm\u00e4ist\u00e4 kertaa peliflow-tutkimuksessa. Ne sis\u00e4lsiv\u00e4t osallistujien tuottamat piirrokset verbaalisine kuvauksineen ja haastatteluineen. Visuaaliset narratiivit analysoitiin flow-teorian ulottuvuuksien avulla. Narratiiveja arvioitiin vertaamalla niit\u00e4 laadullisesti ja yksil\u00f6llisesti kyselyn vastauksiin, mik\u00e4 vahvisti ne johdonmukaisiksi ja niiden analyysin uskottavaksi. Tulokset osoittivat, ett\u00e4 narratiiveilla voidaan erottaa selke\u00e4sti peliflow ja ei-peliflow toisistaan osallistujien subjektiivisesti arvioimina. Selkeimmin tilat erottaa toisistaan psykologinen kupla. Peliflow\u2019n edelt\u00e4j\u00e4t (selke\u00e4t tavoitteet ja palaute sek\u00e4 haasteiden ja taitojen tasapaino) ja ulottuvuudet (keskittyminen, ajantajun muutos, hallinnan tunne, min\u00e4tietoisuuden kadottaminen, toiminnan ja tietoisuuden yhteensulautuminen sek\u00e4 sis\u00e4inen motivaatio) vahvistavat klassista flow-teoriaa. My\u00f6s ei-peliflow psyykkisen\u00e4 entropiana vahvistaa flow-teoriaa. Uudet l\u00f6yd\u00f6kset, et\u00e4l\u00e4sn\u00e4olo, emootioiden m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 ja my\u00f6nteinen muutos peliflow\u2019n aikana, pelin tapahtumien ennakointi ja peliflow-tilan havaitseminen muissa pelaajissa laajentavat flow-teoriaa. There are several billions of gamers in the world and millions of video games. Flow as a mental state is a studied interaction between the game and the gamer using questionnaires which uncertainly separate gaming flow and gaming non-flow states from each other. The purpose of the study was to increase understanding of the nature of the states and their distinction using visual narratives. Ten experienced video gamers described both their gaming flow and non-flow states with visual narratives which were apparently applied for the first time in gaming flow research. They included participant produced drawings with verbal descriptions and interviews. Visual narratives were analysed using the dimensions of the flow theory. The narratives were evaluated by comparing them qualitatively and individually to questionnaire results, which confirmed they were consistent, and their analysis is credible. The results show that narratives can clearly separate gaming flow and gaming non-flow from each other as subjective evaluations by the gamers. The clearest separator of the states is the psychological bubble. Gaming flow antecedents (clear goals and feedback and the balance between challenges and skills) and dimensions (concentration, change in sense of time, feeling of control, loss of self-awareness, merging of action and awareness and intrinsic motivation) enforce the classic flow theory. Also gaming non-flow as psychic entropy reinforces the flow theory. New findings, telepresence and the number and change in positive emotions during gaming flow, predicting game events, and observing the gaming flow state in other players expand the flow theory. These findings were not present in gaming non-flow. Because of the number of participants in my study, the results are not statistically generalizable, but they can be generalized to flow theory and to the theory of visual strategies and visual language. The study is interpretational; thus, a peer reviewer would have increased credibility. The work recommends that game designers finalise their games before publishing and to pay attention to playability. The study encourages further research on social gaming flow and to develop flow imagery.
