Yksi merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4 \nluontokatoa hidastava toimintamalli on lievent\u00e4mishierarkia, jolla pyrit\u00e4\u00e4n \nsaavuttamaan luontoarvojen kokonaisheikentym\u00e4tt\u00f6myys. Lievent\u00e4mishierarkian mukaan luonnon heikent\u00e4mist\u00e4 tulee ensisijaisesti v\u00e4ltt\u00e4\u00e4, sitten lievent\u00e4\u00e4 ja lopulta kunnostaa luontoarvoja paikan p\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4. Jos n\u00e4ill\u00e4 toimenpiteill\u00e4 ei saavuteta kokonaisheikentym\u00e4tt\u00f6myytt\u00e4, voidaan hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4 ekologista kompensaatiota. Ekologisella kompensaatiolla tarkoitetaan luontoarvojen hyvitt\u00e4mist\u00e4 ihmistoiminnasta aiheutuneen luontokadon vuoksi. Onnistunut kompensaatio edellytt\u00e4\u00e4 luontotyyppien tilan kartoittamista systemaattisesti, jotta luontohaitta sek\u00e4 -hyvitys voidaan m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4llist\u00e4\u00e4; t\u00e4m\u00e4 mahdollistaa my\u00f6s kompensaatiolaskennan. Ekologinen kompensaatio tulisi ottaa osaksi jokaista maank\u00e4ytt\u00f6projektia, sill\u00e4 maank\u00e4ytt\u00f6 on luontokadon ajureista merkitt\u00e4vin. Tutkimuksessani perehdyin uuteen ja vanhaan kansalliseen luontoselvitysoppaaseen sek\u00e4 Espoon ja Keravan kaupunkien luontoselvityksiin. Analysoin, kuinka luontoselvitysoppaissa mainitut sis\u00e4lt\u00f6vaatimukset toteutuvat luontoselvityksiss\u00e4, ja sis\u00e4lt\u00e4v\u00e4tk\u00f6 luontoselvitykset riitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti luontotietoa ekologisen kompensaation menestyksekk\u00e4\u00e4seen toteutukseen. Vertailin my\u00f6s Espoon kaupungin luomaa luontotyyppien edustavuuden arviointiluokittelua BOOST-tutkimusryhm\u00e4ss\u00e4 kehitettyyn metsien ekologisen tilan mittaristoon. Tutkimuksessa k\u00e4vi ilmi, ett\u00e4 luontoselvityksiss\u00e4 on runsaasti laadullisia eroja, eiv\u00e4tk\u00e4 ne sis\u00e4ll\u00e4 riitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti tietoa ekologisen kompensaation toteutukseen. Luontoselvitysoppaan sis\u00e4lt\u00f6vaatimukset eiv\u00e4t my\u00f6sk\u00e4\u00e4n toteudu luontoselvityksiss\u00e4. Espoon luoma edustavuuden arviointiluokittelu ja BOOST-tutkimusryhm\u00e4ss\u00e4 kehitetty ekologisen tilan mittaristo ovat hyvin samankaltaisia; ekologista tilaa mitataan molemmissa systemaattisesti. Jotta luontoselvitykset voidaan toteuttaa ekologisen kompensaation kannalta riitt\u00e4v\u00e4ss\u00e4 mittakaavassa, tulisi luontoselvitysoppaassa olla tiiviit ja selke\u00e4t kriteerit ekologisen tilan mittaamiseksi ja luontotiedon ker\u00e4\u00e4miseksi. Biodiversity loss can be tackled in several ways and with many tools, of which one of the most valuable is mitigation hierarchy. Mitigation hierarchy is a four step tool used to reach no net loss or even net positive impact of biodiversity. Mitigation hierarchy consists of avoiding negative effects on the environment, minimizing these effects, and restoring lost values by fixing caused issues on site. If no net loss of biodiversity is not reached through these steps, biodiversity offsetting should be utilized. Biodiversity offsetting is the compensation of human-induced biodiversity loss. Successful biodiversity offsetting requires systematic mapping of habitat types\u2019 ecological condition in order to quantify biodiversity losses and needed offsets. Quantifying also enables offset calculations. Offsetting should be standardized as a tool in every land-use project since land-use is the greatest driver of biodiversity loss. In my research I studied the most recent, as well as the previous, national nature survey guides and two nature surveys from Espoo and Kerava. I analysed these documents to find out if the nature surveys were structured in accordance with the guides\u2019 instructions and if the nature surveys had enough information for a successful execution of biodiversity offsets. I also compared the \u201chabitat type representativeness system\u201d created by the city of Espoo to the \u201cmeasuring ecological condition of forests\u201d system created by BOOST research group. My research showed that there are several qualitative differences in the nature surveys, and they don\u2019t offer enough information for the execution of biodiversity offsets. The measuring systems created by the city of Espoo and BOOST research group were quite similar; the ecological condition of a given habitat type is measured systemically. To be able to conduct nature surveys in favour of biodiversity offsets in the future it is crucial to have clear and simple criteria for how to measure the ecological condition of a habitat and how to collect correct information from each habitat type.
