Tunnistamalla kaatumisten riskitekij\u00f6it\u00e4, niit\u00e4 voidaan ennaltaehk\u00e4ist\u00e4. Aiemmat kaatumiset voivat aiheuttaa kaatumisen pelkoa. Kaatumisen pelko voi v\u00e4hent\u00e4\u00e4 i\u00e4kk\u00e4iden henkil\u00f6iden fyysist\u00e4 aktiivisuutta ja sosiaalista osallistumista. Monipuolisella liikuntaharjoittelulla voidaan ennaltaehk\u00e4ist\u00e4 kaatumisia ja kaatumisen pelkoa. I\u00e4kk\u00e4\u00e4t henkil\u00f6t harrastavat monipuolisesti erilaista liikuntaa ja liikkuvat paljon omassa l\u00e4hiymp\u00e4rist\u00f6ss\u00e4\u00e4n. Ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n olosuhteet ja liikuntapaikkojen saavutettavuus mahdollistavat i\u00e4kk\u00e4iden henkil\u00f6iden liikunnan harrastamisen. Ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n koetut esteet voivat est\u00e4\u00e4 i\u00e4kk\u00e4iden ihmisten liikunnan harrastamisen. Kaatumiset ja kaatumisen pelko voivat johtaa liikunnan harrastamisen v\u00e4henemiseen. Liikunnan harrastamisella on positiivisia vaikutuksia i\u00e4kk\u00e4iden henkil\u00f6iden terveydelle ja hyvinvoinnille. T\u00e4m\u00e4n pro gradu -tutkielman tarkoituksena oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 miten i\u00e4kk\u00e4iden miesten kaatumiset ja kaatumisen pelko ovat yhteydess\u00e4 liikunnan harrastamisen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4n kodin ulkopuolella. Lis\u00e4ksi tutkittiin selitt\u00e4\u00e4k\u00f6 asumismuoto i\u00e4kk\u00e4iden miesten kaatumisen pelon ja kodin ulkopuolisen liikunnan harrastamisen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n v\u00e4list\u00e4 yhteytt\u00e4.\n\nT\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa k\u00e4ytettiin Helsingin syntym\u00e4kohorttitutkimuksen (The Helsinki Birth Cohort Study, HBCS) aineistoa. Helsingin syntym\u00e4kohorttitutkimukseen osallistui vuosina 1934\u201344 Helsingiss\u00e4 syntyneet henkil\u00f6t, jotka asuivat Suomessa vuonna 1971. Kliinisen tutkimuksen l\u00e4ht\u00f6tilanteessa vuosien 2001\u20132004 aikana tutkimukseen osallistui 2003 henkil\u00f6\u00e4. Seurantatutkimuksia on j\u00e4rjestetty kaksi. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa k\u00e4ytettiin toisen kliinisen seurantatutkimuksen vuosien 2017\u20132018 aikana ker\u00e4tty\u00e4 tietoa miehist\u00e4 (n=357), jotka olivat tutkimushetkell\u00e4 72\u201384-vuotiaita. Liikunnan harrastamisen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4 mitattiin yksik\u00f6ll\u00e4 METh/vko (metabolinen ekvivalentti tuntia viikossa). Kaatumisia ja kaatumisen pelkoa mitattiin itsearviointikyselyll\u00e4. Kaatumisten ja kaatumisen pelon yhteytt\u00e4 liikunnan harrastamisen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4n analysoitiin lineaarisella regressioanalyysilla.\n\nKaatuneiden miesten liikunnan m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n keskiarvo mitattuna METh/viikossa oli 31,8, joka on noin 2,5 yksikk\u00f6\u00e4 pienempi kuin ei-kaatuneiden. Kaatumisen pelkoa usein kokeneiden miesten liikunnan m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n keskiarvo oli 24,5, joka on noin 12 METh/vko pienempi verrattaessa niihin, jotka eiv\u00e4t kokeneet kaatumisen pelkoa. Kaatumiset ja kaatumisen pelko eiv\u00e4t olleet yhteydess\u00e4 i\u00e4kk\u00e4iden miesten liikunnan harrastamisen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4n tilastollisesti merkitsev\u00e4sti (p=0,118).\n\nT\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkielman mukaan kaatumiset ja kaatumisen pelko eiv\u00e4t olleet yhteydess\u00e4 liikunnan harrastamisen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4n i\u00e4kk\u00e4ill\u00e4 miehill\u00e4. Asumismuoto ei selitt\u00e4nyt kaatumisen pelon ja liikunnan harrastamisen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n v\u00e4list\u00e4 yhteytt\u00e4. Tuloksista voidaan kuitenkin p\u00e4\u00e4tell\u00e4, ett\u00e4 kaatumisen pelon lis\u00e4\u00e4ntyess\u00e4 i\u00e4kk\u00e4iden miesten liikunnan harrastamisen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 v\u00e4henee. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa tutkittavat olivat melko hyv\u00e4kuntoisia. Aiempien tutkimusten mukaan kaatumiset ja kaatumisen pelko aiheuttavat paljon vammoja i\u00e4kk\u00e4ille henkil\u00f6ille ja rasittavat yhteiskuntaa. Liikunnalla on my\u00f6s todettu olevan monia terveytt\u00e4 edist\u00e4vi\u00e4 vaikutuksia. By identifying risk factors for falls, they can be prevented. Previous falls can cause a fear of falling. Fear of falling can reduce physical activity and social participation in older people. With versatile exercise training, falls and the fear of falling can be prevented. Elderly people practice a variety of different types of exercise and move around a lot in their own surroundings. The environmental conditions and the accessibility of exercise places enable elderly people to exercise. Perceived obstacles in the environment can prevent older people from exercising. Falls and the fear of falling can lead to a decrease in exercise. Exercising has positive effects on the health and well-being of older people. The purpose of this master's thesis was to find out how elderly men's falls and the fear of falling are associated to the amount of exercising outside the home. In addition, it was researched whether the type of residence explains the relationship between elderly men's fear of falling and the amount of exercise outside the home.\n\nThis study used data from the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study (HBCS). Persons born in Helsinki between 1934 and 1944 who lived in Finland in 1971 participated in the Helsinki birth cohort study. At the baseline of the clinical trial, 2003 people participated in the study during the years 2001\u20132004. Two follow-up examinations have been organized. This study used data collected during the years 2017\u20132018 of the second clinical follow-up study on men (n=357) who were 72\u201384 years old at the time of the study. The amount of exercise was measured with the unit METh/week (metabolic equivalent of one hour per week). Falls and fear of falling were measured with a self-assessment questionnaire. The relationship between falls and fear of falling with the amount of exercise was analyzed using linear regression analysis.\n\nFalls and fear of falling were not statistically significantly related to the amount of exercise in elderly men (p=0.118). The average amount of exercise measured in METh/week for men who had fallen was 31.8, which is about 2.5 units lower than for men who had not fallen. The average amount of exercise for men who often experienced the fear of falling was 24.5, which is about 12 METh/week lower compared to those who did not experience the fear of falling.\n\nAccording to this study, falls and the fear of falling were not related to the amount of exercise in elderly men. The type of residence did not explain the relationship between the fear of falling and the amount of physical activity. However, it can be concluded from the results that as the fear of falling increases, the amount of exercise in elderly men decreases. The subjects in this study were quite fit. According to previous studies, falls and the fear of falling cause many injuries to elderly people and burden society. Exercise has also been found to have many health-promoting effects.
