Tutkimuksen aineisto kerättiin Oxfordissa osana suurempaa tutkimusprojektia vuosina 2010–2011. This was conducted by studying effects of phonological categories shaped by native language on the auditory event-related potential N250. The data was collected in Oxford as part of a larger research project during the years 2010-2011. The data consisted of 32 children and 11 adults who spoke English as their native language. The subjects participated in MEG recordings in which event-related potentials were measured to syllables which were preceded by a syllable that belonged either to the same or to a different phonological category. The statistical analyses were conducted using repeated measures ANOVA. The results of the study demonstrated that the amplitude of the children’s N250 response did not differ statistically significantly depending on if the syllable was preceded by a syllable that belonged to the same or to a different phonological category. Children belonging to different age groups did not differ from each other statistically significantly regarding this processing either. In turn, the amplitude of the N250 response among the adults was statistically significantly lower than among the children. The N250 response of the adults did not however change statistically significantly differently compared to the children depending on whether the syllable was preceded by a syllable that belonged to the same or to a different phonological category. The results of the study indicate that the N250 response might not be a sensitive indicator of the effects of language environment on the processing of phonological information in the brain. It could be possible that instead of processing phonological information, the N250 response reflects other stages of auditory processing, such as processing of acoustic information. However, the results of the study support findings of previous studies that the N250 response is a significant event- related potential in the auditory processing of especially children and thus might reflect plasticity of the auditory cortex. In the future, research concerning the N250 response could increase knowledge about sensitive periods in for example language learning. In order to understand the role of language environment in the processing of phonological information in children’s brains, future research should compare processing of phonological information also in other language systems in addition to English.
dc.description.provenance
Made available in DSpace on 2023-06-15T06:38:58Z (GMT).
