Att utreda lärarnas metoder att stöda elevernas positiva kroppsbild är motiverat inte enbart ur den nationella läroplanens synvinkel, utan även med tanke på ungas utmaningar med kroppsbild samt de positiva hälsoeffekter en positiv kroppsbild medför. I studien tillämpades en kvalitativ ansats. Forskningsmaterialet bestod av sex semistrukturerade individuella intervjuer med finlandssvenska gymnastiklärare som undervisar på högstadiet. Intervjuerna varierade i längd mellan 23–40 min. Det transkriberade materialet blev 53 sidor (font Times New Roman, fontstorlek 12, radavstånd 1,5) till sin längd. Materialet analyserades med en materialbaserad kvalitativ innehållsanalys. I regel kunde lärarna definiera begreppet kroppsbild i enlighet med den vetenskapliga definitionen. Elevernas kroppsbild tar sig i gymnastikundervisningen till uttryck i elevernas arbetande, i hur de vill visa kroppen och uttrycksnivån varierar enligt innehåll. Lärarna strävar till att stöda elevernas kroppsbild via noggrann organisering och planering av lektionernas innehåll, genom att förse alla elever med upplevelser av kompetens samt via medvetet kroppsbildsfrämjande agerande under lektionerna. Resultaten indikerar att genom att organisera undervisning som betonar trygghet och undviker utpekanden, erbjuder upplevelser av kompetens åt eleverna oavsett färdighetsnivå, innehåller mångsidiga teman och genom lärarens elevkännedom och positiva feedback kan elevernas kroppsbild främjas. Resultaten ur denna avhandling kan utnyttjas av undervisande gymnastiklärare som är i behov av hjälpmedel för att stöda elevernas positiva kroppsbild. The aim of this master’s thesis was to study physical education teachers’ perceptions of the students’ body image in P.E. Firstly, the study focused on the teachers’ ability to define the term body image, followed by an investigation into how students’ body image is expressed in P.E. Finally, the study explored P.E. teachers’ perceptions and methods for supporting students’ positive body image in their teaching. To study how teachers can support their students’ positive body image is motivated not only by the national curriculum but also by earlier studies showing challenges with body image in adolescents. A positive body image has also been associated with several positive health outcomes. A qualitative approach was applied in the study. The research material consisted of six semi-structured individual interviews with secondary school P.E. teachers. The interviews duration varied in length from 23–40 minutes. The transcribed material resulted in 53 pages (font Times New Roman, font size 12, line spacing 1.5). The material was analyzed using a material-based qualitative content analysis. In general, the teachers were able to define the term body image. Students’ body image was expressed in P.E. lessons in how well they participated during lessons, in their comfortability to show their bodies, and the rate of expression varied with lesson content. The teachers strive to support students’ positive body image through careful organization and planning of lesson content, by giving out experiences of competence to all students, and by displaying body image-supportive behavior. The results indicate that students’ body image can be supported through organization of education that emphasizes safety and avoids pointing out students’ bodies. Teachers should also offer feelings of competence regardless of the students’ skill level, plan diverse lesson content and give out positive feedback. The results from this thesis can be used by P.E. teachers who need help in supporting their students’ body image, or by P.E. student teachers who are interested in the topic.
