Useita periaatteita on kehitetty kognitiivisen kuormituksen luontaisten, ulkoisten ja hy\u00f6dyllisten piirteiden hallintaan. Tavat v\u00e4hent\u00e4\u00e4 ulkoista kuormitusta kohdistuvat usein oppimateriaalin ulkon\u00e4\u00f6llisiin ja rakenteellisiin piirteisiin. Kuvien on todettu joko edist\u00e4v\u00e4n tai heikent\u00e4v\u00e4n oppimista niiden tarpeellisuuden mukaan. Koristeelliset kuvat motivoivat oppijaa ja tekev\u00e4t oppimistilanteesta mieluisamman. Tutkimustieto ei kuitenkaan ole samaa mielt\u00e4 kuvituskuvien vaikutuksesta varsinaiseen oppimiseen. Aikaisempaa tutkimusta kuvituskuvien vaikutuksista ohjelmoinnin oppimiseen ei ole tehty. T\u00e4m\u00e4 tutkimus pyrkii selvitt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n, miten asiayhteyteen liittyv\u00e4t kuvituskuvat vaikuttavat olio-ohjelmoinnin oppimisen kognitiivisen kuormitukseen noviiseilla oppijoilla. Tulokset n\u00e4ytt\u00e4v\u00e4t, ett\u00e4 kuvituskuvilla ei ole merkityksellist\u00e4 vaikutusta opiskelijoiden kokemaan kognitiiviseen kuormitukseen. Tutkimuksessa havaittiin keskikokoinen korrelaatio teht\u00e4vist\u00e4 suoriutumisen ja kognitiivisen kuormituksen kanssa. Many principles have been developed to aid in managing its intrinsic, extraneous, and germane features. Methods for reducing extraneous load often assess the visuality and structure of the learning material\u2019s elements. Images have been found to either promote or hinder learning depending on their redundant nature. Decorative images have been found to motivate students and make the learning experience more enjoyable. There is however contradicting research on their effects on actual learning. No prior research has been done on decorative images' effects on computer programming. This study aims to find how decorative, context-specific images affect the cognitive load of object-oriented programming learning for novice students. The results show that decorative images have no significant effect on the cognitive load experienced by learners. A medium-sized correlation between task performance and cognitive load was observed. The results indicate that decorative images do not affect the cognitive load of learning computer programming, but managing the cognitive load of programming materials by other means should be done to promote learning.
