Viime vuosikymmenten tutkimus on muovaillut m\u00e4\u00e4ritelm\u00e4n \nsointiv\u00e4rille ja mallin sointiv\u00e4rin hahmottamiselle, jossa erilaiset sointiv\u00e4rin hahmotusavaruuden \nulottuvuudet korreloivat tiettyjen \u00e4\u00e4nen akustisten ominaisuuksien kanssa. N\u00e4iden ulottuvuuksien \nkeskin\u00e4inen vuorovaikutus muodostaa havaintomme sointiv\u00e4rist\u00e4.\nJatkuvaa arviointia on k\u00e4ytetty menetelm\u00e4n\u00e4 musiikkipsykologian tutkimuksissa ja t\u00e4st\u00e4 on saatu \ndataa esimerkiksi siit\u00e4, miten tutkittavat hahmottavat erilaisia musiikin elementtej\u00e4. T\u00e4m\u00e4 tutkimus selvitti, miten musiikin kuuntelijat voisivat hahmottaa musiikin kirkkauden muotoa. Tutkimuksen data ker\u00e4ttiin k\u00e4ytt\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 jatkuvan arvioinnin menetelm\u00e4\u00e4. \nMusiikin kirkkauden muoto vastaa ilmi\u00f6t\u00e4, jossa melodialle syntyy muoto, kun se etenee s\u00e4velest\u00e4 toiseen ajan mittaan. Samaan tapaan sointiv\u00e4rin kirkkauden vaihtelulle syntyy muoto, kun \nkappale etenee ajan my\u00f6t\u00e4.\nT\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen osallistujat rekrytoitiin Jyv\u00e4kyl\u00e4n yliopiston yhteis\u00f6st\u00e4 ja heid\u00e4n teht\u00e4v\u00e4n\u00e4\u00e4n \noli arvioida jatkuvasti, k\u00e4ytt\u00e4en liukus\u00e4\u00e4dint\u00e4, kuinka kirkkaaksi he kokivat kuulemansa musiikin. Kuuntelutilanteessa k\u00e4ytetty \u00e4rsyke oli klassista orkesterimusiikkia, jota pidettiin ekologisesti validina. Liukus\u00e4\u00e4timen liikkeet tallennettiin liikkeenkaappaus teknologialla ja data analysoitiin matemaattisesti vertaamalla sit\u00e4 sointiv\u00e4riin liittyv\u00e4\u00e4n, musiikkitiedostoista irrotettuun dataan.\nTuloksena t\u00e4ss\u00e4 aihetta kartoittavassa tutkimuksessa l\u00f6ydettiin merkkej\u00e4 siit\u00e4, ett\u00e4 aiemman tutkimuksen esitt\u00e4m\u00e4, sointiv\u00e4rin hahmottamisen malli toimii my\u00f6s ekologisesti valideissa kuuntelutilanteissa ja ett\u00e4 sointiv\u00e4ri ja siihen liittyv\u00e4 kirkkaus hahmotetaan moniulotteisesti, sointiv\u00e4rin \nhahmotusavaruuden ulottuvuuksien keskin\u00e4isen vuorovaikutuksen mukaan. Research in past decades have formulated definition for timbre \nand a timbre space model of timbre perception according to which different timbre dimensions \ncorresponding to different acoustical features of sound, interplay and creates the perceptual timbre of sound.\nContinuous rating studies have been used in music psychology studies as a method for collecting data for example about how subjects perceive different elements of music.\nThis study explored how listeners might perceive musical brightness contour. The data was \ngathered by employing continuous rating type of method. Brightness contour means that similarly as a melody forms a contour when its unfolding in time, changing brightness forms a contour when the music unfolds in time. The task of the participants of this study, who were recruited from the community of the University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4, was to continuously rate by using a \nslider control, how bright they perceived the music. The stimulus that was used were classical \nmusic and were considered as ecologically valid. The movements of the slider control were captured by motion capture technology and the data was later analysed mathematically by comparing the movement data to timbre related music feature data retrieved from the music files.\nAs a result, this explorative study found indications that the timbre space model works in the \necologically valid listening situations as well and that the brightness is perceived multidimensionally according to the interplay of different timbre dimensions.
