Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli rakentaa ymm\u00e4rryst\u00e4 siit\u00e4, millaisia etnisyyteen, rodullistamiseen ja kulttuureihin liittyvi\u00e4 representaatioita sek\u00e4 antirasistisia pyrkimyksi\u00e4 varhaiskasvatuksessa k\u00e4ytett\u00e4v\u00e4t materiaalit ilmensiv\u00e4t. Tutkimusta ohjasi kysymys \u201d Kuinka rasismi ja antirasismi ilmenev\u00e4t suomalaisen varhaiskasvatuksen visuaalisissa oppimisymp\u00e4rist\u00f6iss\u00e4?\u201d.\nTutkimus toteutettiin visuaalisia tutkimusmenetelmi\u00e4 k\u00e4ytt\u00e4en. Aineistonkeruumenetelm\u00e4n\u00e4 k\u00e4ytettiin valokuvausmenetelm\u00e4\u00e4, joka toteutettiin viidess\u00e4 eri jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4l\u00e4isess\u00e4 p\u00e4iv\u00e4kodissa. Kuva-aineisto analysoitiin teorial\u00e4ht\u00f6isen visuaalisen temaattisen analyysin avulla, jossa hy\u00f6dynnettiin rasismin ja antirasismin teorioita.\nTuloksista selvisi, ett\u00e4 varhaiskasvatuksen oppimisymp\u00e4rist\u00f6ist\u00e4 l\u00f6ytyi hienovaraisia rasismin ilmentymi\u00e4 valkonormatiivisuuden ja rasististen representaatioiden muodossa. Tutkimukseen osallistuneiden p\u00e4iv\u00e4kotien oppimisymp\u00e4rist\u00f6ist\u00e4 ei l\u00f6ytynyt visuaalisia ilmentymi\u00e4 varsinaisen antirasistisen ty\u00f6otteen toteutumisesta, mutta pyrkimyksi\u00e4 yhdenvertaisuuden ja moninaisuuden tukemiseen l\u00f6ytyi. Kuitenkin osa n\u00e4ist\u00e4 hyv\u00e4\u00e4 tarkoittavista pyrkimyksist\u00e4 sis\u00e4lsi my\u00f6s rasistisia piirteit\u00e4, mik\u00e4 korostaa kriittisen reflektoinnin t\u00e4rkeytt\u00e4 varhaiskasvatuksen ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n rakentamisessa ja pedagogisten materiaalien valinnassa.", "language": "fi", "element": "description", "qualifier": "abstract", "schema": "dc"}, {"key": "dc.description.abstract", "value": "This research explored visual manifestations of racism and antiracism in Finnish early childhood education and care (ECEC) learning environments and in their pedagogical materials in order to develop understanding of issues related to power hierarchies between, and representations of, different cultures and \u201craces\u201d, and to reveal ways in which these everyday surroundings indicate contributions to the antiracist agenda. This study was guided by a question \u201cHow are racism and antiracism manifested in visual learning environments of Finnish early childhood education and care?\u201d\nThis critically oriented, qualitative research utilised visual methodology when aiming to answer the research question. Photo-documentation was used as a data collection method. Data collection took place in five ECEC centres in the city of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4. The learning environments were systematically observed and photographed in order to understand the type of antiracist and racist representations in the learning materials and objects on the walls. The visual data was examined by applying theoretically approached visual thematic analysis, in which theories on racism and antiracism were used as analytical lenses.\nResults of this study showed that subtle emergences of prejudice and exclusion in objects and pedagogical materials can be found from ECEC learning environments. Results also indicated the lack of overt antiracist commitments expressed in the ECEC settings, but addressed endeavours to promote equity, equality, and diversity.
