Koska suurin osa nuorista ka\u0308ytta\u0308a\u0308 sosiaalista mediaa, ja sosiaalisella medialla on todettu olevan vaikutuksia nuorten kokemuksiin kehonkuvastaan, aiheesta on ta\u0308rkea\u0308a\u0308 saada ajankohtaista ja uutta tutkimustietoa nuorten hyvinvoinnin tukemiseksi.\n\nTutkimus toteutettiin kvalitatiivisena tutkimuksena ja se asemoituu fenomenologis- hermeneuttiseen tutkimusperinteeseen, silla\u0308 pyrkimyksena\u0308 oli ymma\u0308rta\u0308a\u0308 nuorten kokemuksia tutkittavasta ilmio\u0308sta\u0308 ja tulkita heida\u0308n antamiaan merkityksia\u0308. Tutkimukseen osallistui viisi keskisuomalaisessa lukiossa opiskelevaa tytto\u0308a\u0308. Tutkimusaineisto koostui puolistrukturoiduista teemahaastatteluista, ja tutkimusaineisto analysoitiin laadulliseen tutkimukseen soveltuvalla aineistola\u0308hto\u0308isella\u0308 sisa\u0308llo\u0308nanalyysilla.\n\nTutkimukseen osallistuneet lukiolaiset tyto\u0308t ka\u0308yttiva\u0308t sosiaalista mediaa pa\u0308ivitta\u0308in. Suosituimpia kanavia olivat Instagram, Snapchat ja Tiktok. Yksi keskeisimmista\u0308 sosiaalisen median ka\u0308ytto\u0308motiiveista oli sosiaalisten suhteiden ylla\u0308pito. Muita ka\u0308ytto\u0308motiiveja olivat oman sisa\u0308llo\u0308n julkaisu ja vapaa-ajan vietto. Suurin osa lukiolaisista julkaisi sisa\u0308lto\u0308a\u0308 sosiaalisen median eri kanaviin. Tutkimuksen mukaan lukiolaiset tyto\u0308t olivat ta\u0308lla\u0308 hetkella\u0308 tyytyva\u0308isia\u0308 omaan kehonkuvaansa, mutta kehotyytyma\u0308tto\u0308myytta\u0308 oli ilmennyt erityisesti yla\u0308kouluaikoina. Suurimpia syita\u0308 kehotyytyma\u0308tto\u0308myydelle olivat olleet korona-aika seka\u0308 muihin vertailu sosiaalisessa mediassa. Nuoret kokivat, etta\u0308 sosiaalisen median sisa\u0308lto\u0308 on epa\u0308realistista, koska kuvia muokataan niin paljon. Tutkimukseen osallistuneilla nuorilla oli hyva\u0308 sosiaalisen median lukutaito, silla\u0308 he tiedostivat sosiaalisen median epa\u0308realistisuuden. Tutkimustulosten perusteella liikunnan- ja erityisesti terveystiedon opetuksessa tulisi painottaa enenevissa\u0308 ma\u0308a\u0308rin sosiaalisen median lukutaidon opettamista eri kouluasteilla. In addition, the study examined what kind of social media users high school girls are and what thoughts they have about their own body image. Most young people use social media, and using social media has an examined impact on their experiences of body image. Therefore, it is important to obtain new research data on the effects of social media to support their well-being.\n\nThe study was conducted as qualitative research and its research position is part of the phenomenological hermeneutics tradition, because the aim was to understand high school girls\u2019 own experiences. The participants of the study were five female high school students in Central Finland. The data was gathered through semi-structured theme interviews. The data was analyzed by using data-oriented content analysis which is suitable for qualitative research.\n\nThe participants used social media every day. The most popular social media channels were Instagram, Snapchat and Tiktok. One of the main motives for using social media was to maintain social relationships. Other motives included publishing their own content and spending free time. Most high school students posted content on different social media channels. According to the study, the high school girls were currently satisfied with their own body image, but body dissatisfaction had been particularly evident during their lower secondary school years. The main reasons for body dissatisfaction had been COVID-19 and comparison to others on social media. The participants felt that social media content is unrealistic because the pictures are heavily edited. The people who participated in the study had good social media literacy as they were aware of the unreality of social media. Social media literacy promoted a positive perception of body image. A positive perception of body image was also promoted by social media content related to the participants\u2019 own interests and hobbies.\n\nThe significance of physical and health education in building young people's body image and positive experiences is major. Based on the research results, social media literacy should be emphasized in physical education and health education at different school levels.
