Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa selvitettiin, miten lämpeneminen ja rehevöityminen vaikuttavat kasviplanktonin kuuden eri pääryhmän kasvunopeuksiin. Jokaisesta ryhmästä valittiin 1–2 lajia, joiden kasvua seurattiin neljässä erilaisessa käsittelyssä. Lämpenemisen vaikutusta kasvuun selvitettiin kahden eri lämpötilan (18 ja 23 ºC), ja rehevöitymisen kahden eri fosfaattipitoisuuden (20 ja 80 μg/l) avulla. Asetetuista hypoteeseista poiketen lämpötila ja fosfaattipitoisuus eivät vaikuttaneet kaikkien työssä käytettyjen lajien kasvunopeuksien vaihteluihin. Lisäksi sinilevät eivät hyötyneet eniten korkeammasta lämpötilasta, eivätkä r-strategistit korkeammasta fosfaattipitoisuudesta, kuten oletettiin. Työn tuloksista voisi päätellä, että ravintoarvoiltaan rikkaat levät voisivat olla odotettua parempia kilpailijoita vesistöjen lämmetessä ja rehevöityessä. Tämä tutkielma antoi lajikohtaista tietoa levien reagoimisesta lämpötilaan ja fosfaattipitoisuuteen. Työn perusteella erityisesti vesistöjen fosfaattipitoisuus tulee määrittämään kasviplanktonyhteisöjen rakennetta ja sitä, mitkä kasviplanktonlajit tulevat yleistymään. Ilmaston lämpenemisen edetessä vesistöjen ravinnepitoisuuteen onkin erityisen tärkeää kiinnittää huomiota. Temperature and nutrient content affect the growth rate and composition of phytoplankton. As a result of climate change and human activities, surface water temperatures have risen, and there have been changes in nutrient availability. The purpose of this master’s thesis was to investigate how warming and eutrophication affect the growth rates of six different main groups of phytoplankton. From each group, 1–2 species were selected, the growth of which was monitored in four different treatments. The effect of warming on growth was tested by using two different temperatures (18 and 23 ºC), and eutrophication with two different phosphate concentrations (20 and 80 μg/l). Contrary to the hypotheses, temperature and phosphate concentration did not affect the growth rates of all the species used in the work. In addition, cyanobacteria did not benefit most from higher temperature, nor did r-strategists from higher phosphate, as hypothesized. It could be concluded that algae rich in nutritional value could be better competitors than expected as the surface water temperatures rise, and eutrophication occurs. This thesis provided species-specific information on the response of phytoplankton to temperature and phosphate concentration. Based on the thesis, the phosphate content of water bodies in particular will determine the structure of phytoplankton communities and which phytoplankton species will become more common. As the climate continues to warm, it is especially important to pay attention to the nutrient content of water bodies.
