Teknostressillä on todettu olevan paljon negatiivisia vaikutuksia niin yksilön henkiseen kuin fyysiseen terveyteen, ja se voi myös vaikuttaa yksilön suoriutumiseen työssään. Teknostressin ja pikaviestinnän välistä yhteyttä on tutkittu vähän, ja monet tutkimuksista sijoittuvat 2000-luvun alkuun, jolloin teknostressin muodostumisesta ei vielä tiedetty kovin paljoa. Tämän tutkielman tavoitteena oli tutkia pikaviestinnän käyttöä työajalla ja sen yhteyttä teknostressin muodostumiseen. Tavoitteeseen pyrittiin tutustumalla aiempaan kirjallisuuteen aiheesta sekä suorittamalla laadullinen haastattelututkimus. Tutkimuksessa todettiin pikaviestinnän olevan työajalla jatkuvasti käytössä useissa eri käyttötarkoituksissa. Sen todettiin kuitenkin aiheuttavan yksilölle paljon stressitekijöitä työajalla. Pikaviestien suuren määrän, ilmoitusten ja jatkuvan pikaviestinnän työajalla todettiin olevan yhteydessä teknostressin kokemiseen. Pikaviestinnän käytössä todettiin olevan monella myös riippuvuuden piirteitä. Yleisimpien pikaviestinnän aiheuttaman teknostressin vaikutuksien työskentelyyn todettiin olevan ajankäytölliset ongelmat, syvätyön puute ja työkuorman nousu. The use of instant messaging during working hours has been steadily increasing and now plays a key role in the way individuals communicate. Both personal instant messengers such as WhatsApp and work instant messengers such as Teams and Slack are used during working hours. Instant messaging is a convenient and fast form of communication, but it can also have negative effects on things like the user's concentration and time management. These negative effects can lead to technostress, which is a well-studied phenomenon in the use of technology. Technostress has been shown to have a wide range of negative effects on both the mental and physical health of individuals and can also affect their performance at work. The link between technostress and instant messaging has been little studied, and many of the studies date back to the early 2000s, when not much was known about the development of technostress. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the use of instant messaging during working hours and its association with technostress. This was achieved by reviewing previous literature on the subject and by conducting a qualitative interview study. The study found that instant messaging is used continuously during working hours for a variety of purposes. However, it was found to cause a great deal of stress to individuals during working hours. High levels of instant messaging, notifications and constant instant messaging during working hours were found to be associated with the experience of technostress. The use of instant messaging was also found to be addictive for many. The most common effects of technostress caused by instant messaging on work were found to be time management problems, lack of deep work and increased workload.
