Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitettiin turpeesta peräisin olevien humushappojen kykyä tehostaa öljyhiilivedyillä pilaantuneen maaperän kemiallista ja biologista kunnostamista. Tutkimuksen lähestymistapana oli kokeellinen työ, jossa öljyhiilivedyillä pilaantuneelle maa-ainekselle tehtiin panos- ja kolonnikoe sekä kaksi vetyperoksidikoetta. Panos- ja kolonnikokeessa selvitettiin öljyhiilivetyjen biohajoavuutta kemiallisen käsittelyn jälkeen. Kemiallisena käsittelynä oli muokattu Fenton-menetelmä, jossa käytettiin humushappoja metalli-ionien kelatoimiseen ja siten estämään vetyperoksidin liian nopeata hajoamista. Vetyperoksidikokeissa selvitettiin pelkän vetyperoksidin vaikutusta maanäytteen öljyhiilivetypitoisuuden vähenemiseen sekä humushappojen kykyä hidastaa vetyperoksidin hajoamista öljyhiilivedyillä pilaantuneissa maanäytteissä. Panos- ja kolonnikokeen aikana öljyhiilivetypitoisuudet vähenivät kemiallisen käsittelyn ja biohajoamisen myötä. Panoskokeessa öljyhiilivetypitoisuudet vähenivät alle niille määritellyn ohjearvon, mutta kolonnikokeessa öljyhiilivetypitoisuudet jäivät ohjearvojen yläpuolelle. Humushappojen havaittiin hidastavan vetyperoksidin hajoamista kolonneissa tehdyissä kokeissa, mikä voi selittää öljyhiilivetyjen heikompaa hajoamista lyhyen kontaktiajan kolonnikokeessa. Panoskokeessa humushappojen vaikutusta ei kuitenkaan ollut nähtävissä, sillä öljyhiilivetypitoisuus väheni kaikissa näytteissä suunnilleen saman verran. Vetyperoksidi tehosti öljyhiilivetyjen hajoamista, mutta se oli melko tasavertainen veden ja humusvalmisteiden kanssa. Tämän tutkimuksen perusteella humusvalmisteiden kehittämistä ei välttämättä kannata suunnata öljyhiilivedyillä pilaantuneen maaperän kunnostamiseen, mutta aihetta olisi kuitenkin hyvä tutkia lisää. Soil contamination is an environmental problem caused by human activity and it can be harmful not only to the environment but also to human health. Due to harmful effects caused by soil contamination, it is important to remediate contaminated areas. In this thesis, the ability of peat derived humic acids to enhance the chemical and biological remediation of petroleum hydrocarbons contaminated soil was investigated. The approach of the study was experimental work where a batch test, a column test and two hydrogen peroxide tests were performed for the petroleum hydrocarbons contaminated soil. In the batch and column test, the biodegradability of petroleum hydrocarbons after the chemical treatment was investigated. The chemical treatment was a modified Fenton reaction where the humic acids were used to chelate metal ions and thus to prevent too rapid decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. In the hydrogen peroxide tests, the effect of the hydrogen peroxide alone to decrease the petroleum hydrocarbon concentration of the soil sample was investigated, as well as the ability of the humic acids to reduce the decomposition of the hydrogen peroxide in soil samples contaminated with the petroleum hydrocarbons. During the batch and column test, the petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations decreased due to the chemical treatment and biodegradation. In the batch test, the petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations decreased below their guideline value, but in the column test the petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations remained above the guideline values. The humic acids were observed to reduce the decomposition of the hydrogen peroxide in the column experiments which may explain the weaker degradation of the petroleum hydrocarbons in the short contact time column experiment. However, the effect of the humic acids was not possible to see in the batch test because the petroleum hydrocarbon concentration declined approximately the same amount in all samples. The hydrogen peroxide enhanced the decomposition of the petroleum hydrocarbons, but it was quite equal to water and humic substances. Based on this study, the development of humic substances should not necessarily focus on the remediation of petroleum hydrocarbons contaminated soil, but it would be good to do more research on this topic.
