Kasvatus ja formaali koulutus tunnistetaan keskeisin\u00e4 keinoina edist\u00e4\u00e4 kest\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 kehityst\u00e4. Kest\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4n kehitykseen liittyv\u00e4t teemat ilmenev\u00e4t valtakunnallisen opetussuunnitelman arvopohjassa, toimintakulttuurissa ja laaja-alaisen osaamisen tavoitteissa. Sek\u00e4 lukiokoulutuksen ett\u00e4 perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelmat ohjaavat huomioimaan kest\u00e4v\u00e4n el\u00e4m\u00e4ntavan rakentamisen n\u00e4k\u00f6kulman opetusty\u00f6ss\u00e4, mik\u00e4 edellytt\u00e4\u00e4 opettajilta ensinn\u00e4kin kest\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 kehityst\u00e4 edist\u00e4v\u00e4n kasvatuksen tuntemusta mutta toisaalta my\u00f6s k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6n toteutusta.\n\nT\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkielman tarkoituksena oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 suomalaisissa kouluissa toimivien liikunnan ja terveystiedon opettajien valmiuksia toteuttaa kest\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 kehityst\u00e4 edist\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 kasvatusta aineenopetuksessa. Tarkoituksena oli my\u00f6s tarkastella, mill\u00e4 tavoin opettajat kokevat kest\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 kehityst\u00e4 edist\u00e4v\u00e4n kasvatuksen toteuttamisen vaativuuden suhteessa perusopetuksen ja lukion valtakunnallisten opetussuunnitelmien perusteissa ilmeneviin kest\u00e4v\u00e4n el\u00e4m\u00e4ntavan rakentamisen tavoitteisiin. Tutkielman tarjoama tieto on hy\u00f6dyllist\u00e4 erityisesti liikunnan ja terveystiedon aineenopettajille ja kyseisten oppiaineiden aineenopettajaksi opiskeleville.\n\nTutkimuksen aineisto ker\u00e4ttiin osana LIITO 2021 -kysely\u00e4. Tutkimus toteutettiin verkkopohjaisena kyselytutkimuksena ja se sis\u00e4lsi taustatietojen lis\u00e4ksi viisi Likert-asteikollista kysymyst\u00e4 sek\u00e4 yhden avoimen kysymyksen. Vastauksia kertyi yhteens\u00e4 78. Kuvailevia tietoja k\u00e4ytettiin frekvenssien ja vastausjakaumien tarkastelussa. Kysymysten vastausjakaumien eroja suhteessa eri muuttujiin tutkittiin ristiintaulukointimenetelm\u00e4ll\u00e4. Ryhmien v\u00e4lisi\u00e4 eroja selvitettiin yksisuuntaisella varianssianalyysill\u00e4 ja riippumattomien otosten t-testill\u00e4. Vastaajista suurin osa (75,7 %) koki, ett\u00e4 opettajankoulutuksesta sai heikosti valmiuksia toteuttaa kest\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 kehityst\u00e4 edist\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 kasvatusta. Vastaajien ik\u00e4, sukupuoli ja maantieteellinen sijainti eiv\u00e4t olleet tilastollisesti merkitsevi\u00e4 selitt\u00e4ji\u00e4 vastausten vaihtelussa. Sen sijaan ty\u00f6kokemus vaikuttaisi lis\u00e4\u00e4v\u00e4n opettajien kokemia valmiuksia l\u00e4hes merkitsev\u00e4sti (p=.069). Global warming and environmental degradation created the need to address and evaluate the developmental and environmental challenges, and sustainable development (SD) in all its dimensions seeks to meet these challenges. Education is one of the central ways to promote sustainable development. Sustainability and sustainable development are identified comprehensively in the national core curriculum. The themes are addressed in the curriculum\u2019s values, school culture and transversal competence learning targets. Both basic education and upper secondary curricula direct teachers to take notice of advancing students\u2019 sustainable lifestyles in their educational work, which requires teachers to have knowledge of education for sustainable development (ESD) but also the ability to put it into practice.\n\nThe purpose of this study was to examine Finnish physical and health education teachers\u2019 perceived competence to implement education for sustainable development (ESD) to their subject teaching. In addition, the aim of the present study was to examine how demanding of a task implementing ESD was for the subject teachers, in relation to the goals of building a sustainable lifestyle expressed in the national curricula. Information provided by the study is particularly useful for those who work in the field of physical and health education but also for prospective subject teachers.\n\nThe data consisted of 78 answers from Finnish physical and health education teachers. The data were collected online through a Webropol-survey in autumn 2021 and it included five Likert- scale questions and one open-ended question. The research material was collected as a part of the LIITO 2021 survey. Descriptive data were used to examine frequencies and response distributions. Differences in the answer distributions in relation to the variables were examined by using crosstabulations. Differences between groups were determined by univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) and t-test of independent samples. A large proportion of the respondents (75,7 %) felt that they received only little or not at all competence from their teacher education. Respondent\u2019s age, gender and geographic location were not statistically significant explanators for variability in the responses. In contrast, work experience would appear to increase teachers\u2019 perceived competence almost significantly (p=.069).
