Sis\u00e4isen tarkkaavuuden kohdistamista ty\u00f6muistissa yll\u00e4pidettyihin representaatioihin voidaan tutkia takaumavihjekoeasetelman avulla, jossa j\u00e4lkik\u00e4teen annettu visuaalinen takaumavihje kohdistaa tarkkaavuuden muistissa yll\u00e4pidettyyn visuaaliseen representaatioon. Sis\u00e4isen tarkkaavuuden kohdistamisen on havaittu parantavan ty\u00f6muistisuoritusta, mik\u00e4 saattaa johtua esimerkiksi tarkkaavuuden kohdistamisen aikaansaamasta muistirepresentaation vahvistumisesta. Sis\u00e4isen tarkkaavuuden ja ty\u00f6muistin neuraalisen perustan tutkimiseksi takaumavihjekoeasetelma on yhdistetty aivokuvantamismenetelmiin. Yksi keskeisi\u00e4 ty\u00f6muistin ja tarkkaavuuden aivoprosesseja on alfa-oskillaatio, mutta on ep\u00e4selv\u00e4\u00e4, miten sen rooli eroaa n\u00e4iden prosessien v\u00e4lill\u00e4. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa tarkastelimme n\u00e4k\u00f6aivokuoren rytmist\u00e4 toimintaa sis\u00e4isen tarkkaavuuden kohdistamisessa hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 takaumavihjekoeasetelmaa yhdess\u00e4 MEG-kuvantamisen kanssa eksploratiivisella tutkimusotteella. Tutkimme n\u00e4k\u00f6aivokuoren alfa-oskillaation modulaatiota mieleenpainamisen ja visuaalisen takaumavihjeen esitt\u00e4misen aikana sek\u00e4 takaumavihjeen (neutraali tai validi) vaikutusta n\u00e4k\u00f6aivokuoren alfa-oskillaatioon. Tuloksemme osoittivat, ett\u00e4 mieleenpainaminen ja takaumavihjeen esitt\u00e4minen aiheuttivat voimistunutta alfa-oskillaatiota n\u00e4k\u00f6aivokuorella. Lis\u00e4ksi havaittiin ennakoivaa alfa-oskillaatiota, joka saattaa kuvata tarkkaavuuden kohdistamiseen liittyvi\u00e4 prosesseja. Mieleenpainamisen (muistiaineksen yll\u00e4pidon) aikana alfa-oskillaatio oli voimakkaampaa kuin takaumavihjeen k\u00e4sittelyn (sis\u00e4isen tarkkaavuuden) aikana. Lis\u00e4ksi alfa-oskillaatio oli voimakkaampaa neutraalin vihjeen kuin validin vihjeen j\u00e4lkeen. T\u00e4m\u00e4 voimakkaampi alfa-oskillaatio mieleenpainamisen ja neutraalin vihjeen aikaansaamana voisi kertoa muistikuorman aiheuttamasta suuremmasta ponnistelusta. Tutkimuksemme mukaan alfa-oskillaatiolla vaikuttaisi olevan roolinsa sek\u00e4 tarkkaavuuden ett\u00e4 ty\u00f6muistin prosesseissa. Aivopuoliskojen v\u00e4lisi\u00e4 eroja tarkasteltaessa havaittiin, ett\u00e4 alfa-oskillaatio oli voimakkaampaa oikeassa aivopuoliskossa molemmissa vihjetyypeiss\u00e4. T\u00e4m\u00e4 saattaa kuvata aivopuoliskojen erilaista roolia sis\u00e4isen tarkkaavuuden kohdistamisen prosesseissa verrattuna mieleenpainamiseen, jossa aivopuoliskot vaikuttaisivat ty\u00f6skentelev\u00e4n samalla tavalla. Alfa-oskillaation modulaatio sis\u00e4isen tarkkaavuuden kohdistamisessa vaikuttaa olevan yksil\u00f6llist\u00e4. The direction of internal attention to representations maintained in working memory can be studied using a retro-cue paradigm, in which a retrospectively presented visual memory cue directs attention to a visual representation maintained in memory. Directing internal attention to relevant information has been found to improve working memory performance, which may be due to the enhancement of the memory representation induced by directing attention to relevant information. To investigate the neural basis of internal attention and working memory, the retro-cue paradigm has been combined with brain imaging. One of the essential brain processes involved in working memory and attention is alpha oscillation, but it is unclear how its role differs between these processes. In the present study, we investigated the rhythmic modulation of visual cortex on internal attention using the retro-cue paradigm with MEG on exploratory approach. We investigated the modulation of alpha oscillation in the visual cortex during the presentation of memory array and a visual memory cue, and the effect of the memory cue (neutral or valid) on alpha oscillation in the visual cortex. Our results showed that encoding and cue induced increased alpha oscillation in the visual cortex. In addition, anticipatory alpha oscillation was observed, which may reflect attention related processes. During encoding (memory maintenance), alpha oscillation was stronger than during processing of the memory cue (internal attention). In addition, alpha oscillation was stronger after a neutral cue than after a valid cue. This stronger alpha oscillation during encoding and due to neutral cue could reflect the greater VWM effort required by the memory load. Our study suggests that alpha oscillation would seem to play a role in both attentional and working memory processes. Examining at hemispheric differences, we found that alpha oscillation was stronger in the right hemisphere in both cue type. This may reflect the different roles of the hemispheres in the internal attention processes on the contrary to encoding, in which the hemispheres seem to work in the same way. The modulation of alpha oscillation caused by directing internal attention to mental representation seems to be individual. More research is needed with larger data sets and with different brain imaging techniques. The knowledge of the basis of memory and attention can be used, for example, to develop rehabilitation process for neurological disorders.
