Vaikka sosiaalisella medialla on pitk\u00e4 historia, on sen suosio noussut vasta 2000-luvun j\u00e4lkeen. T\u00e4n\u00e4 p\u00e4iv\u00e4n\u00e4 osin esimerkiksi \u00e4lypuhelimien runsaan k\u00e4yt\u00f6n vuoksi sosiaalinen media on tullut yh\u00e4 vakituisemmaksi osaksi ihmisten arkiel\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4, eik\u00e4 aina voi edes t\u00e4ysin erotella, milloin ollaan yhteydess\u00e4 sosiaaliseen mediaan ja milloin ei. Sosiaalisessa mediassa t\u00f6rm\u00e4\u00e4 usein my\u00f6s englannin kieleen, ja englannista onkin tullut paitsi koko maailman yhteinen kieli eli lingua franca, my\u00f6s internetin k\u00e4ytt\u00e4jien jakama yhteinen kieli. Englanti on samalla vahvistanut asemaansa edelleen my\u00f6s Suomessa.\n\nT\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkielman tarkoitus oli yhdist\u00e4\u00e4 sosiaalisen median ja englannin kielen tutkimusta. P\u00e4\u00e4tavoitteina oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 nuorten suomalaisten n\u00e4kemyksi\u00e4 englannin kielest\u00e4 sosiaalisessa mediassa, ja sit\u00e4, miten sosiaalisen median kieli on vaikuttanut heid\u00e4n englannin kielen taitoihin ja k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n. Tutkimus toteutettiin kyselytutkimuksena, ja kohderyhm\u00e4n\u00e4 olivat 18-30-vuotiaat nuoret suomenkieliset (n=249). Kyselydatan analysointiin k\u00e4ytettiin sek\u00e4 deskriptiivist\u00e4 tilastotiedett\u00e4 ett\u00e4 temaattista analysointitapaa. Suurin osa t\u00e4h\u00e4n tutkimukseen osallistuneista oli korkeakouluopiskelijoita, mik\u00e4 huomioitiin analyysis-s\u00e4. \n\nKyselyyn vastanneista jokainen ilmaisi kohtaavansa englannin kielt\u00e4 sosiaalisessa mediassa. N\u00e4kemykset englannin kielest\u00e4 sosiaalisessa mediassa vaihtelivat vastaajien kesken jossain m\u00e4\u00e4rin. Kuitenkin selke\u00e4n enemmist\u00f6n mielest\u00e4 sosiaalisen median englannin kieli eroaa siit\u00e4 englannista, jota k\u00e4ytet\u00e4\u00e4n sosiaalisen median ulkopuolella muun muassa sanastoltaan, muodollisuudeltaan ja tyylilt\u00e4\u00e4n. Kyselyn vastausten perusteella sosiaalinen media on vaikuttanut vastaajien englannin kielen taitoihin ja k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n: esimerkiksi englannin sanaston ja ymm\u00e4rryksen koetaan parantuneen sosiaalisen median k\u00e4yt\u00f6n my\u00f6t\u00e4, ja my\u00f6s koodinvaihtoa tapahtuu sosiaalisen median k\u00e4yt\u00f6n takia enemm\u00e4n.
