Viimeisten kolmen vuosikymmenen aikana Viron kielilainsäädännöstä on käyty kiivasta keskustelua, johon on osallistunut myös Viron ulkopuolella olevat järjestöt, organisaatiot ja poliittiset liitot. Väittely voidaan nähdä jälkiseurauksena neuvostohistorialle, sen aikana tapahtuneelle venäjänkielisten massamaahanmuutolle Viroon sekä neuvostoajan jälkeisille merkittäville muutoksille lainsäädännössä. Viro ja venäjä eivät kuitenkaan ole ainoat maassa käytetyt kielet ja etenkin Tallinnassa toimii kansainvälisiä yrityksiä, joissa monikielisyys ja etenkin englannin kielen käyttö on keskeisessä roolissa. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää, millaisia kieli-ideologioita voidaan havaita monikielisen työpaikan työntekijöiden kertomuksissa, kun heiltä kysytään kielenkäytöstä työpaikalla. Haastattelukysymysten tavoitteena on selvittää, miten monikielisen työpaikan työntekijät kuvaavat ja perustelevat tapaa, jolla kieltä käytetään töissä. Tutkimuksen aineisto kerättiin haastattelemalla seitsemää monikulttuurisen yrityksen työntekijää. Nauhoitetut haastattelut transkriptioitiin ja valittujen otteiden analysoinnissa käytettiin diskurssianalyysia. Aineisto osoittaa, että monikielisen työpaikan työntekijöiden kertomuksissa voidaan havaita implisiittisiä ja eksplisiittisiä kieli-ideologioita. Viron, venäjän ja englannin kielestä ja niiden käytöstä on monimutkaisia ja toisinaan ristiriitaisia tai päällekkäisiä käsityksiä. Lisäksi havaittiin, että englannin kieleen liittyvät väitteet ja ideat ilmaistiin suoremmin kuin viron ja venäjän kieltä koskevat uskomukset. Osallistujat vaikuttivat kertomustensa perusteella olevan yhtä mieltä siitä, että tiimeissä ja työpaikalla tulisi olla yksi selkeä yhteinen kieli. Moni osallistujista kuvasi työpaikalla tehtyjä kielivalintoja "automaattisiksi", mutta samalla kertomuksista löytyi viittauksia siihen, että kielestä neuvotteleminen on monimutkaisempi prosessi. Lisäksi aineisto osoittaa, että eri työntekijät näkevät työpaikalla tehdyt kielivalinnat eri tavoin riippuen esimerkiksi tiimin tarpeista, haastateltavan äidinkielestä ja muista hänen puhumistaan kielistä. Yhteenvetona voidaan todeta, että kieli on edelleen kiistelty aihe Virossa, jopa työpaikoilla, joilla monikielisyyttä vaalitaan. This study is based on interviews that were conducted at a multilingual workplace in Tallinn. Estonia has an interesting linguistic landscape that is characterized by having two large linguistic groups, only one of whom has an official status in the state. In the past three decades, there has been an ongoing debate surrounding Estonia’s language legislation, as an aftermath of the Soviet history, mass immigration of Russophone people into Estonia as well as reforms made after it. Meanwhile, there are intercultural companies in Estonia, where multilingualism and ability to use two or three languages is central part of everyday work. The goal of the study is to find out what kind of language ideologies can be observed in accounts given by a multilingual workplace’s employees when asked about language use at work. Furthermore, the aim was to find out how employees of a multilingual workplace describe and justify the way language is used at work. Data for this study was gathered by interviewing seven employees of an intercultural company. The recorded interviews were transcribed and analyzed using Discourse Analysis. The data reveals that there are varied language ideologies related to language use at multilingual workplace that can be found implicitly and explicitly in accounts given by the participants. There is a complex and at times contradictory or overlapping set of ideas about the use of English, Estonian and Russian languages. It was also found that the ideologies regarding English language are more explicit compared to those regarding Estonian and Russian languages. What the participants seemed to agree upon was that each of them found there should be one clear common language used in teams or at the workplace as whole. Language choices made at the workplace were often described as “automatic,” yet the data reveals negotiation of language is more complicated process. Furthermore, the data shows that different participants would view the language choices made at the workplace differently depending on their team’s needs but also on their first language or other language repertoire. In conclusion, it can be said that language continues to be a hot topic in Estonia, even at a workplace that on surface level cherishes multilingualism. The present study contributes to the study of language ideologies at work-place by researching the topic in Estonia where language ideologies at workplace have not been studied extensively.
