Matematiikan taitojen kehitykseen vaikuttavat kodin matemaattinen ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6 sek\u00e4 lapsen tapa reagoida ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6ns\u00e4 kanssa eli lapsen temperamentti. T\u00e4m\u00e4n pro gradu -tutkielman tarkoituksena oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, kuinka paljon lapsen varhaiset (2\u20133 v) ja viskarivuonna (5\u20136 v) mitatut matematiikan taidot, kodin matemaattinen ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6 sek\u00e4 lapsen temperamentti ennustavat ensimm\u00e4isen luokan aritmeettista laskutaitoa ja numeroiden v\u00e4lisi\u00e4 suhdetaitoja. Lis\u00e4ksi tarkasteltiin, oliko lapsen temperamentilla muuntava vaikutus kodin matemaattisen ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n ja ensimm\u00e4isen luokan matematiikan taitojen v\u00e4liseen yhteyteen. Tutkimus on osa Vuorovaikutus, kasvu ja oppiminen (VUOKKO) pitkitt\u00e4istutkimusta, jossa tarkastellaan koti- ja kouluymp\u00e4rist\u00f6jen vaikutusta lapsen akateemisiin taitoihin.\n\nVUOKKO pitkitt\u00e4istutkimuksen ensimm\u00e4iseen vaiheeseen osallistui 230 p\u00e4iv\u00e4koti-ik\u00e4ist\u00e4 lasta eri puolilta Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4\u00e4. Tutkimus hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4 kahdesti lasten p\u00e4iv\u00e4kotivuonna (2\u20133 v) ja viskarivuonna (5\u20136 v) sek\u00e4 ensimm\u00e4isen koululuokan kev\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 ker\u00e4tty\u00e4 aineistoa lasten matematiikan taidoista. T\u00e4h\u00e4n tutkimukseen valituilla lapsilla (N = 150) oli v\u00e4hint\u00e4\u00e4n yksi alle koului\u00e4ss\u00e4 (2\u20133 v tai 5\u20136 v) mitattu tieto matematiikan taidoista, sek\u00e4 ainakin yksi ensimm\u00e4isen luokan matematiikan taitojen tulos. Kato oli satunnaista, joten otos edusti alkuper\u00e4ist\u00e4 seurantaotosta hyvin. Vanhemmat (N = 89) t\u00e4yttiv\u00e4t kodin matemaattista ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6\u00e4 ja lapsen temperamenttia koskevan kyselyn lapsen viskarivuonna (5\u20136 v).\n\nAnalyysimenetelm\u00e4n\u00e4 k\u00e4ytettiin hierarkkista lineaarista regressioanalyysia. Malliin lis\u00e4ttiin askeleittain varhaiset (2\u20133 v) matematiikan taidot, viskarivuoden (5\u20136 v) matematiikan taidot, temperamenttipiirteet ja kodin matemaattinen ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6 sek\u00e4 kodin matemaattisen ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n ja temperamentin yhdysvaikutus. Tulokset osoittivat varhaisten (2\u20133 v) taitojen ja viskarivuoden taitojen v\u00e4lill\u00e4 olevan kohtalaisen vahva yhteys. Regressiomallit osoittivat viskarivuoden taitojen selitt\u00e4v\u00e4n noin 20 % ensimm\u00e4isen luokan matematiikan taidoista. Temperamenttipiirteist\u00e4 h\u00e4iriintyvyyden ja sosiaalisuuden osalta l\u00f6ydettiin yhteyksi\u00e4 viskarivuoden ja ensimm\u00e4isen luokan matematiikan taitoihin. Varhaiset (2\u20133 v) matematiikan taidot, lapsen temperamentti ja kodin matemaattinen ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6 eiv\u00e4t ennustaneet ensimm\u00e4isen luokan matematiikan taitoja silloin, kun viskarivuoden taitojen vaikutus oli mallissa mukana. The development of mathematical skills is influenced by home math environment (HME) as well as child\u2019s temperament. In this master\u2019s thesis, first-grade mathematical skills were predicted with earlier math abilities, HME, and temperament. Whether child\u2019s temperament moderated the associations between HME, and first-grade mathematical skills was also explored. This study is a part of a longitudinal research project called Interaction, Development & Learning (VUOKKO) -study.\n\nIn the first phase of the VUOKKO study, 230 kindergarteners were recruited from around the city of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4. The sample of the current study comprised children (N = 150) who had at least one earlier measurement of mathematical skills (at the age of 2\u20133 or 5\u20136) and at least one first-grade measurement of mathematical skills. Missing data was completely random; therefore, the sample represented the original VUOKKO sample well. Children\u2019s mathematical skills were evaluated twice in kindergarten (2\u20133 years), twice in the year before preschool (5\u20136 years), and once in the first grade Spring. Additionally, children\u2019s parents (N = 89) filled out a questionnaire about HME and child temperament when children were 5\u20136 years old.\n\nHierarchical linear regression was conducted for the analyses. Variables were entered into the model in the following order: Step 1, 2\u20133 years mathematical skills; Step 2, 5\u20136 years mathematical skills; Step 3, temperament traits and HME; Step 4, the interaction effect between temperament trait and HME. The results showed a moderately strong association between the mathematical skills at the age of 2\u20133 and 5\u20136. Mathematical skills at the age of 5\u20136 explained 20 % of the variation in first-grade skills. Associations between distractibility and sociability and mathematical skills at the age of 5\u20136 and first grade were also found. Mathematical skills at the age of 2\u20133, temperament traits, and HME didn\u2019t predict first-grade mathematical\nskills when mathematical skills at the age of 5\u20136 were in the model. Preliminary indications that temperamental inhibition moderated the associations between HME, and first-grade mathematical skills were found.\n\nThis study indicates that the connection between early math skills and first-grade skills is found already in the year before preschool. These results also clarify the influence of HME and temperament on first-grade math skills when considering earlier math skills. Initial results offer new information about the unstudied interaction between temperament traits and HME. Results can be applied in planning for early childhood education.
