Tutkimus toteutettiin haastattelemalla kolmea eri aikuismaahanmuuttajaa. The world is getting increasingly global and with that comes opportunities to learn more about different cultures and languages. This also makes it possible to move to other countries. As a consequence of this, different languages come into contact with each other and people move to other countries, which might raise the question of how they learn languages, especially as an adult. This study is focused on adult immigrants’ experiences of different ways to learn languages and how they say they use their language resources while learning a new language. The theoretical viewpoint of this study is sociocultural theory that highlights interaction in the process of internalizing information and the significance of understanding meanings in interaction. This study was conducted by interviewing three adult immigrants. The participants were from different continents (Europe, South Asia and North America) but they had a similar academic background. From the interviews, it was found that each participant's ways of learning languages were different but there were also some common themes found. Specifically using language actively, for example in interaction, was popular among the participants even though not all of them had the chance for it. Music, news and the internet through different websites helped the participants to see and hear the language they are learning in their everyday life. It can be said that there were commonalities between the participants in the ways they use to lear languages but the exact way and reason for utilizing them depended on the individual. The most important factor for the participants seemed to be that the ways used were meaningful and useful to the individual.
