Thus, the therapeutic interaction differs from the other interplays in life. The therapeutic interaction has been proven to affect positively the efficiency and the patient satisfaction in physiotherapy. The aim of this study was to increase the knowledge of physiotherapy students´ qualitatively different conceptions of therapeutic interaction in the client and patient meetings. In addition, the aim was to explore the connections between the conceptions.

The study was conducted as a qualitative interview study utilizing a phenomenographic methodology. Altogether nine physiotherapy students between the ages of 21-42 years participated in the study. The students attended two different universities of applied sciences. All the students were in the final stage of their studies. The interview data was collected with individual remote (Zoom) interviews in December 2021 and January 2022. The interviews were transcribed verbatim, and the data was analysed with a phenomenographic analyzing method according to Åkerlind. The results of the study represent the participants´ conceptions of the research phenomenon.

Physiotherapy students´ conceptions of therapeutic interaction in client and patient meetings were divided into three hierarchically expanding categories of description: I) therapeutic interaction as the physiotherapist´s practical skill, II) holistic therapeutic interaction and III) efficient therapeutic interaction. The hierarchy was seen in the themes of expanding awareness, which were: 1) embodiment, 2) trusting atmosphere, 3) human knowledge, 4) experiences, 5) roles of the interaction and 6) verbal communication. The critical aspects of the categories of description represent central factors of expanding awareness when moving from one category to another. The critical aspects between the first and the second category were ”the client/patient in the centre of the interaction” and ”observing human life holistically in interaction”. The critical aspects between the second and the third categories were ”promoting change in human life” and ”the meaning of interaction in physiotherapy as a whole”.

The results increase the understanding of physiotherapy students´ qualitatively different conceptions of therapeutic interaction and the connections between them. The results are presented as a set of categories, where the conceptions become more complex when moving to a hierarchically higher category. The results can be utilized when developing the physiotherapy education and the practical trainings in physiotherapy. In the future it would be important to examine what kind of conceptions the supervisors of the practical training have of their role in the student-patient interactions. In addition to that it would be interesting to explore how the teachers in universities of applied sciences concept the therapeutic interaction know-how of physiotherapy students and the education in interaction.
dc.description.provenance
Made available in DSpace on 2022-05-03T05:45:38Z (GMT).
