Sosiaalisen kuplan sis\u00e4ll\u00e4 ihmisten on mahdollista helposti etsi\u00e4 omia mielipiteit\u00e4\u00e4n vahvistavaa sis\u00e4lt\u00f6\u00e4 ja vaikea l\u00f6yt\u00e4\u00e4 mit\u00e4\u00e4n niiden vastaista materiaalia. Tutkielmassa syvennyttiin kirjallisuuskatsauksen muodossa sosiaalisten kuplien muodostumiseen liittyviin tekij\u00f6ihin ja kuplien seurauksiin. Sosiaalisten kuplien syntyyn sosiaalisessa mediassa vaikuttavat sek\u00e4 k\u00e4ytt\u00e4j\u00e4n omat valinnat ett\u00e4 sosiaalisen median alustojen k\u00e4ytt\u00e4m\u00e4t algoritmit. Algoritmit suosittelevat k\u00e4ytt\u00e4j\u00e4lle sis\u00e4lt\u00f6\u00e4, joka oletetaan k\u00e4ytt\u00e4j\u00e4lle mieluiseksi. Vahvistusharhan vuoksi yksil\u00f6lle voi olla vaikea huomata sosiaalisen kuplan olemassaolo tai p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4 siit\u00e4 pois. Kuplan sis\u00e4lle joutumista tiet\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00e4\u00e4n voidaan pit\u00e4\u00e4 ei-toivottavana tilanteena, koska t\u00e4ll\u00f6in ihmisen kokemus ymp\u00e4r\u00f6iv\u00e4st\u00e4 maailmasta saattaa yksipuolistua ja informaation kriittinen tarkastelu vaikeutua. Sosiaalisen median k\u00e4ytt\u00e4j\u00e4t voivat kuitenkin vaikuttaa k\u00e4ytt\u00e4j\u00e4kokemukseensa sosiaalisten medioiden alustojen tarjoamilla ty\u00f6kaluilla ja tiedostamalla kuplien olemassaolon mahdollisuuden. It is relatively easy to find information conforming to one\u2019s existing beliefs inside an echo chamber and hard to find anything to the contrary. The objective of this bachelor\u2019s thesis was to examine the factors contributing to the formation of echo chambers as well as the ramifications of echo chambers. This was done by conducting a literary review. Formation of echo chambers in social media environment is affected by the choices made by the users as well as the algorithms used by the social media platforms. Algorithms recommend content to the users based on the presumed preferences of the users. Due to confirmation bias it may be hard for the individual user to notice the existence of an echo chamber or to be able to step outside of it. Being trapped inside an echo chamber without one\u2019s knowledge can be considered undesirable, because the person\u2019s perspective may be narrowed, and it becomes harder to critically evaluate information. However, social media users can influence their user experience by utilizing tools provided by social media platforms and by being alert to the possibility of echo chambers. Echo chambers are also boosting the spread of fake news and are thus shaping public debate. The effects of algorithms and user behavior on the formation of echo chambers are discussed in chapters 2 and 3, respectively.
