Perinteisesti kirjallisuuden avulla on opetettu muun muassa kielioppia ja sanastoa, mutta nykytutkimus on painottanut kirjallisuuden merkityst\u00e4 my\u00f6s kulttuuritietoisuuden rakentajana. Aikaisempi tutkimus on kuitenkin keskittynyt vieraskielisen kirjallisuuden k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n luokkahuoneessa, eik\u00e4 informaaleissa konteksteissa tapahtuvaa vieraalla kielell\u00e4 lukemista ole juurikaan tutkittu. Tutkielmani tavoitteena onkin selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, kuinka suomea \u00e4idinkielen\u00e4\u00e4n puhuvat kokevat oppineensa englantia vapaa-ajan lukuharrastuksen ja sosiaalisen median Bookstagram-kirjayhteis\u00f6n kautta. Tutkielman osallistujiksi on valittu kaksi Bookstagrammaajaa, jotka lukevat aktiivisesti englanniksi vapaa-ajallaan. Tutkimusaineisto ker\u00e4ttiin haastattelemalla osallistujia puolistrukturoidun haastattelun avulla. Haastatteluaineisto analysoitiin teemoittelemalla.\n\nTutkimuksen tulokset osoittivat, ett\u00e4 kirjallisuuden lukeminen koetaan suurimmaksi osaksi hy\u00f6dylliseksi tavaksi oppia sek\u00e4 kielt\u00e4 ett\u00e4 sit\u00e4 ymp\u00e4r\u00f6iv\u00e4\u00e4 kulttuuria. Haastateltavien mukaan kirjallisuutta tulisi hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4 vieraiden kielten tunneilla useammin, oppilasl\u00e4ht\u00f6isemmin ja tarpeeksi pohjustaen. Vapaa-ajalla tapahtuva englanniksi lukeminen n\u00e4htiin hyvin positiivisessa valossa, ja se koettiin my\u00f6s sis\u00e4isesti motivoivana. Bookstagram-yhteis\u00f6ll\u00e4 ei sen sijaan vaikuttanut olevan suoraa yhteytt\u00e4 kielenoppimiseen, mutta yhteis\u00f6t koettiin vapauttaviksi ja motivoiviksi harrastusymp\u00e4rist\u00f6iksi. \n\nTutkimustulokset voivat auttaa kehitt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n kirjallisuuden k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00e4 opetuksessa sek\u00e4 ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n, millaiset seikat motivoivat oppijoita lukemaan vieraalla kielell\u00e4 sek\u00e4 koulussa ett\u00e4 vapaa-ajalla. Tutkimustulosten yleist\u00e4minen on haastavaa pienen otoksen takia, joten jatkotutkimus voi kehitt\u00e4\u00e4 laajempaa ymm\u00e4rryst\u00e4 n\u00e4ist\u00e4 aiheista.
