Kaikki makean veden kasviplanktoniin kuuluvat eli\u00f6t pystyv\u00e4t tuottamaan v\u00e4ltt\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00f6mi\u00e4 aminohappoja, sek\u00e4 lyhytketjuisia omega-3 rasvahappoja, kuten alfalinoleenihappoa (ALA) ja linolihappoa (LIN). Sen sijaan pidempiketjuisten omega-3 rasvahappojen eikosapentaeenihapon (EPA) ja dokosaheksaeenihapon (DHA) synteesiin kykenev\u00e4t vain kultalev\u00e4t (Chrysophyceae), nielulev\u00e4t (Cryptophyceae) ja panssarisiimalev\u00e4t (Dinophyceae). Edell\u00e4mainittujen levien lis\u00e4ksi my\u00f6s piilev\u00e4t (Diatomophyceae) tuottavat EPA:a ja silm\u00e4lev\u00e4t (Euglenophycaea) DHA:ta. J\u00e4rvien rehev\u00f6itymisen ja ilmastonmuutoksen seurauksena yleistyneet syanobakteerit (Cyanophyceae) ja viherlev\u00e4t (Chlorophyceae), eiv\u00e4t kykene tuottamaan pitk\u00e4ketjuisia rasvahappoja lainkaan. Lis\u00e4ksi syanobakteereissa ei ole steroleita, jonka vuoksi ne ovat huonolaatuista ravintoa varsinkin vesikirpuille. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa selvitettiin kuinka kahden ravinteisuudeltaan erityyppisen j\u00e4rven sestonissa tuotettujen v\u00e4ltt\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00f6mien biomolekyylien pitoisuuksissa tapahtuvat muutokset vaikuttivat eri el\u00e4inplanktonsukujen ravintoarvoon ja biomassaan, kun laadukkaampaa ravintoa tuottavat kasviplanktonluokat joutuivat kilpailemaan elintilastaan syanobakteeri- ja viherlev\u00e4yhteis\u00f6jen kanssa. V\u00e4ltt\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00f6mien rasvahappojen osalta muutos vaikutti noin kahden viikon viiveell\u00e4 sestonia suodattamalla sy\u00f6vien Bosmina- ja Daphnia-vesikirppujen, sek\u00e4 omnivoristen kyklooppihankajalkaisten (Cyclopoida) biomassaan ja ravintoarvoon. Daphnia-vesikirppujen, kyklooppihankajalkaisten ja Limnocalanus-keijuhankajalkaisten biomassaa rajoittivat l\u00e4hinn\u00e4 pitk\u00e4ketjuisten rasvahappojen DHA:n ja DPA:n (dokosapentaeenihapon) saatavuus, sek\u00e4 Bosmina-vesikirpuilla DHA:n ja DPA:n lis\u00e4ksi my\u00f6s EPA:n ja sterolien saatavuus. Eudiaptomus-keijuhankajalkaiset onnistuivat pit\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n kudosten rasvahappopitoisuudet suhteellisen korkeina koko tutkimusjakson ajan, mutta niiden biomassaa rajoitti sterolien saatavuus.
