Perinteinen datakeskusvetoinen keskitetty pilvilaskenta törmää tällöin haasteisiin, joita ratkomaan on syntynyt pilvilaskennan osa-alue, josta käytetään kattokäsitettä reunalaskenta. Se tuo tiedon käsittelyn joko laitteeseen tai laitteen lähelle. Reunalaskennan synonyyminä käytetään monissa yhteyksissä sumulaskentaa. Sumulaskenta yrittää asettua esineiden internetin laitteiden ja pilven väliin hyödyntämällä molempien tärkeimmät edut. Tutkielmassa toteutetaan kirjallisuuskatsaus, jossa eritellään esineiden internetin vaatimukset, niiden aiheuttamat haasteet keskitetylle laskennalle, ja sumulaskennan tarjoamat mahdollisuudet ratkaista näitä ongelmia. Katsauksessa tunnistetaan sumulaskennan erityispiirteet ja edut, jotka tukevat sekä esineiden internettiä että pilvilaskentaa. Niiden myötä todetaan, että sumu- ja pilvilaskennan yhdistelmää hyödynnetään erityisesti kaupallisissa ja teollisissa sovelluksissa, jotka edellyttävät sekä sumulaskennan paikallisuutta (esimerkiksi ympäristötietoisuutta ja reaaliaikaista toimintaa) että pilven globaalia laskentakykyä (esimerkiksi massadatan ja analytiikan osalta). The Internet of Things is changing the way people operate and communicate with smart devices in a physical environment. The number of devices is projected to grow faster than Internet users, and the use will expand to areas where real-time processing of large amounts of data is required. Traditional datacenter-driven centralized cloud computing encounters then requirements and challenges that it cannot meet. Umbrella concept of edge computing, a subset of cloud computing, has emerged to serve these challenges. It brings data processing either to or near the device. In many contexts, fog computing is used as a synonym for edge computing. Fog computing attempts to settle between the Internet of Things devices and the cloud, taking advantage of the main benefits of both. This thesis reviews the literature that specifies the requirements of the Internet of Things, the challenges they cause to centralized computing, and the possibilities offered by fog computing to solve these problems. The review identifies the fog computing special features and advantages, which support both the Internet of Things and cloud computing. Based on those, it is stated that the combination of fog and cloud computing is beneficial especially in commercial and industrial applications, that require both the localization of fog computing (e.g., environmental awareness and real-time operation) and the global computing capability of the cloud (e.g., for mass data and analytics).
