Vaikka BI:t\u00e4 on tutkittu paljon, on aiemmassa tutkimuksessa havaittavissa selke\u00e4 puute: BI:t\u00e4 on tutkittu l\u00e4hinn\u00e4 suurten yritysten n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta, j\u00e4tt\u00e4en pienet ja keskisuuret (pk) yritykset v\u00e4h\u00e4lle huomiolle. Vaikka pk-yrityksill\u00e4 on isoja yrityksi\u00e4 rajallisemmat taloudelliset resurssit, mink\u00e4 takia niiden investoinnit IT:seen ovat harvinaisempia ja pienempi\u00e4, ei se kuitenkaan tarkoita, etteiv\u00e4t ne voisi saada BI:st\u00e4 yht\u00e4 merkitt\u00e4vi\u00e4 hy\u00f6tyj\u00e4 kuin isotkin yritykset. T\u00e4m\u00e4 tutkimus pyrkii vastaamaan t\u00e4h\u00e4n puutteeseen perehtym\u00e4ll\u00e4 siihen, miten ja millaisilla resursseilla ja strategisilla toimilla BI-kyvykkyys saadaan rakennettua pk-yrityksiin. Jotta BI:t\u00e4 voidaan ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4\u00e4 mahdollisimman laajasta n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta, valittiin teoreettiseksi linssiksi BI-kyvykkyyden k\u00e4site, johon sis\u00e4ltyv\u00e4t niin teknologiset, strategiset kuin prosesseihin ja henkil\u00f6st\u00f6\u00f6nkin liittyv\u00e4t seikat. Tutkimuksen kirjallisuuskatsauksessa pyrit\u00e4\u00e4n selkeytt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n BI:n k\u00e4sitett\u00e4 ja ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n millaisia resursseja ja strategisia toimia BI-kyvykkyyden rakentaminen vaatii. Empiirisess\u00e4 osassa pyrit\u00e4\u00e4n selkeytt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n BI-kyvykkyyden rakentamista pkyritysten n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta. Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisena tutkimuksena. Data ker\u00e4ttiin teemahaastattelun keinoin ja analysoitiin k\u00e4ytt\u00e4en sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysia. Tulokset paljastivat, ett\u00e4 BI-kyvykkyyden rakentamisessa avainasemassa ovat liiketoimintal\u00e4ht\u00f6isyys, ketter\u00e4t menetelm\u00e4t, yksinkertainen ja helppok\u00e4ytt\u00f6inen teknologinen infrastruktuuri, kohdennettu datankeruumenetelm\u00e4 sek\u00e4 loppuk\u00e4ytt\u00e4j\u00e4koulutus. Lis\u00e4ksi todettiin, ett\u00e4 BI-kyvykkyyden rakentamiseen tarvitaan kahdenlaisia resursseja. BI-resurssit ovat BI-kyvykkyyden edellytys ja sis\u00e4lt\u00e4v\u00e4t BI infrastruktuurin, BI henkil\u00f6st\u00f6resurssit, BI:n luoman tiet\u00e4myksen ja laadukkaan datan. N\u00e4iden resurssien rakentamisen taas tunnistetiin tarvitsevan yrityksen itsens\u00e4 tunnistaman BI-tarpeen, johdon riitt\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 sitoutumista sek\u00e4 taloudellisia, ajallisia ja henkil\u00f6st\u00f6llisi\u00e4 resursseja. Keskeisen\u00e4 johtop\u00e4\u00e4t\u00f6ksen\u00e4 BI-kyvykkyyden todettiin syntyv\u00e4n pidemm\u00e4ll\u00e4 aikav\u00e4lill\u00e4 ja pala kerrallaan, eik\u00e4 niink\u00e4\u00e4n yksitt\u00e4isen BI-projektin tuloksena. Sek\u00e4 kirjallisuuden ett\u00e4 empirian perusteella strategisen ohjaamisen kulmakiven\u00e4 voidaan pit\u00e4\u00e4 \u201caloita pienesti, ajattele suuresti\u201d ideologiaa.", "language": "fi", "element": "description", "qualifier": "abstract", "schema": "dc"}, {"key": "dc.description.abstract", "value": "During the last decades both empirical research and practical experience have manifested the benefits of Business Intelligence (BI), including for example cost savings, improved efficiency, and better understanding of business partners. However, even though BI has been extensively studied, there seems to be a gap in the prior research: BI has been researched mostly from the perspective of large companies while leaving small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) with less attention. SMEs naturally have fewer financial resources available than large companies, meaning less and smaller investments to IT. However, this does not necessarily indicate that SMEs could not get as significant benefits from BI as large companies. This study addresses this gap by examining how BI capability can be built in SMEs, and what kind of resources and strategic efforts it requires from SMEs. To observe BI from a wider perspective, the concept of BI capability was selected as a theoretical lens, as it incorporates technological, strategic, process and personnel related aspects. The literature review clarifies the concept of BI and tries to understand what kind of resources and strategic efforts are required to build a BI capability. Empirical part aims to clarify how BI capability can be built in SMEs in particular. Research was conducted using qualitative approach. Data was collected using theme interviews and analyzed using content analysis. Results revealed that the cornerstones of building BI capability are business-driven approach, agile methods, simple and easy-to-use technological infrastructure, focused data collection approach, and end user training. Furthermore, data revealed that there are two sets of resources that are required to build a BI capability. BI resources are the prerequisite for BI capability and include BI infrastructure, BI human resources, BI enabled intangibles, and high-quality data. Building of these resources requires another set of resources that are a recognized BI need, committed management, financial resources, time resources and personnel resources. Key conclusion of the study is that BI capability is created piece by piece over a longer period of time, rather than as a result of an individual BI project.
