At the same time, physical inactivity has become a global health challenge which requires changes in the societal structures. The operational culture of early childhood education and care (ECEC) has a significant impact on what kind of opportunities are offered to children and how the opportunities support children’s PA. The purpose of this study was to investigate which factors influence the formation of physically active operating culture in ECEC.

The data was collected during spring 2021 using an electronic questionnaire (Webropol 3.0, Finland). The questionnaire was mailed to 59 principals and 99 PA educators of municipal ECEC centers in the City of Vantaa. The sample was formed by using randomly chosen ECEC centers educators from mentioned municipal (n = 68). Statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS Statistics -software. The statistical significance value was set at p < 0.05. Open-Ended questions were analyzed by qualitative content analysis.

A total of 68 early childhood educators responded to the questionnaire. According to the results of the study, the operating culture atmosphere, open interaction and together developed rules promote PA. Especially, support from the unit principal plays a significant role. Responsibility issues, and the size and accessibility of the indoor environment seem to limit PA. Respondents’ background variables had no significant effect on PA in this study. During the Covid-19-pandemic, the PA of the ECEC groups have generally remained (79 %) unchanged. However, the pandemic has limited the use of municipal sport facilities, increased the workload of educators, and made it more difficult to find substitutes. It has required educators to adapt pedagogical activities and emphasized the role of the unit principal.

Supporting a physically active operation culture in ECEC is a common process for whole society, which requires a commitment to common goals. Opening a debate on the responsibility issues of ECEC educators’, minimizing haste and defining common practices and values in the operation culture are the first steps towards a more physically active culture in ECEC. In the upcoming conventions, special attention should be targeted towards indoor running and climbing facilities, possibilities for childlike wrestling, and supporting PA of children under three
years old. In future studies, it will be necessary to find out what kind of information educators have about different levels of children’s PA, and to compare them with the actual activity levels of children. Furthermore, it is necessary to examine children’s perspective on how they see their PA possibilities as a part of the operation culture and whether they wish more PA in their ECEC days.
dc.description.provenance
Made available in DSpace on 2021-10-14T06:15:16Z (GMT).
