Reaktiossa k\u00e4ytett\u00e4vi\u00e4 bifunktionaalisia alumiinioksidille tuettuja Cu/ZnO-katalyyttej\u00e4 on tutkittu paljon vuosien varrella, mutta yksimielisyytt\u00e4 katalyytin aktiivisesta kohdasta ja reaktiomekanismista ei ole saavutettu. Viimeisimm\u00e4t tutkimukset ovat kuitenkin osoittaneet, ett\u00e4 ristiriitaiset tulokset aktiivisen kohdan luonteesta johtuvat tutkimusten v\u00e4lill\u00e4 poikkeavista reaktio-olosuhteista. Todenn\u00e4k\u00f6isin aktiivinen kohta on kuparin ja sinkkioksidin rajapinta. Reaktiomekanismina toimii todenn\u00e4k\u00f6isesti formiaatin kautta etenev\u00e4 reitti.\n\nTutkimusprojektissa testattiin yksinkertaisia laskennallisia malleja nanorakenteisen sinkkioksidin ja kuparipinnan rajapinnasta. Malleilla tarkasteltiin hiilidioksidin adsorptiota ja formiaatin vedytysreaktioita. Hiilidioksidin adsorptio mallipinnoille oli liev\u00e4sti endotermist\u00e4 tai termoneutraalia. Pinta aktivoi molekyylin, mik\u00e4 havaittiin muutoksina pinnan ja molekyylin elektronirakenteissa sek\u00e4 molekyylin taipumisena. Formiaatin vedytysreaktioiden reaktioentalpiat ovat malleilla yli 1 eV eli hyvin endotermisi\u00e4.
