Näihin vaatimuksiin on vaikea vastata hyödyntämällä ainoastaan maaverkkoja. Maaverkkojen kattavuus eikä kapasiteetti välttämättä riitä täyttämään 5G-verkoille asetettuja suuria vaatimuksia. Hyödyntämällä satelliittiverkkoja 5G-maaverkkojen yhteydessä voitaisiin tarjota nopea yhteys myös paikkoihin, joissa maaverkkojen kapasiteetti tai kantavuus ei riitä. Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitetään kuinka hyvin satelliittiverkot toimivat 5G-radiorajapinnassa simuloimalla verkon suorituskykyä verkkosimulaattorilla 3GPP:n määrittelemissä kalibraatioskenaarioissa. Mobile technologies have developed greatly in the past decades, but global demand for data has grown even faster. 5G network has strict requirements to fill, meaning that fast, reliable and efficient connection should be available anywhere, anytime. These requirements will be difficult to meet using only traditional terrestrial networks as the capacity and coverage of these networks may not be sufficient. Using non-terrestrial networks combined with traditional terrestrial networks could make it possible to meet the requirements set for 5G. The aim of this study is to find out how well non-terrestrial networks function using 5G.
