Perusaineenvaihdunta, eli aineenvaihdunnan minimitaso, vaikuttaa yksilöiden selviytymiseen eli voi olla kelpoisuuden kannalta merkittävä ominaisuus. Lisäksi maksimaalinen hapenottokyky eli aerobinen kapasiteetti voi vaikuttaa yksilöiden kelpoisuuteen, sillä monet yksilön kannalta tarpeelliset toiminnot vaativat fyysistä aktiivisuutta, kuten reviirin puolustaminen tai kilpailu lisääntymiskumppaneista. Tästä syystä tutkin, onko korkeasta aerobisesta kapasiteetista etua koiraiden lisääntymismenestyksen kannalta. Tutkin lisäksi, onko tämä etu riippuvainen ympäristön ravintoresursseista. Testaan myös, parantaako korkea aerobinen kapasiteetti koiraiden menestystä koiraiden välisessä kilpailussa naaraista ja suosivatko naaraat parinvalinnassaan koiraiden korkeaa aerobista kapasiteettia. Kokeissa tutkittiin kahta metsämyyrätaktiikkaa, jalostamattomia kontrollimyyriä ja korkean aerobisen kapasiteetin perusteella jalostettuja myyriä. Aerobisen kapasiteetin ja lisääntymismenestyksen välisen suhteen riippuvuutta ravinnon saatavuudesta tutkittiin tarhakokeella, jossa myyrätaktiikoiden, korkea aerobinen kapasiteetti ja kontrolli, yksilöt kilpailivat keskenään lisääntymisestä tarhoissa, joissa ravintoresurssit olivat luonnolliset sekä tarhoissa, joissa oli jatkuvasti tarjolla lisäravintoa. Menestystä koiras-koiraskilpailussa sekä naaraanvalinnassa tutkittiin kahdella laboratoriossa toteutetulla käyttäytymiskokeella. Koiraat, joilla oli korkea aerobinen kapasiteetti, saivat keskimäärin 1,6 kertaa enemmän jälkeläisiä, kuin kontrollikoiraat. Lisäruoka paransi koiraiden lisääntymismenestystä, muttei vaikuttanut taktiikoiden lisääntymismenestykseen eri tavoin. Taktiikoiden välillä ei havaittu eroa menestyksessä seksuaalivalinnassa. Syyt korkean aerobisen kapasiteetin lisääntymismenestysedulle jäivät epäselviksi, sillä ravinnonsaatavuus, seksuaalivalinta tai selviytyminen eivät selittäneet taktiikoiden välisiä lisääntymismenestyseroja tyhjentävästi. Tulokset kuitenkin osoittavat, että aerobinen kapasiteetti voi olla merkittävä koiraiden kelpoisuutta määrittävä tekijä. Tulosteni perusteella korkea aerobinen kapasiteetti todennäköisesti hyödyttää yksilöitä epäsuorasti ja vuorovaikutuksessa ympäristötekijöiden ja muiden ominaisuuksien kanssa. Metabolic rate defines the rate at which energy is used for different functions. Baseline metabolism (minimum metabolic rate required for basic maintenance) can influence the survival of individuals, a central component of individuals’ fitness. Additionally, aerobic capacity, maximal oxygen uptake, could also influence fitness, because many important features of individuals’ function require physical activity, for example competition over mates and defending territory. Therefore, the aim of my thesis was to examine, whether high aerobic capacity improves the reproductive success of male bank voles. I also studied whether the possible reproductive success benefit depends on environment’s food availability. Finally, I tested whether high aerobic capacity males succeed better in male-male competition for females and if females prefer high aerobic capacity males. The experiments were conducted using two bank vole tactics that were selectively bred in the laboratory. One tactic was selected for high aerobic capacity and the other was a control tactic, which was not selected for any trait. I studied the effects of high aerobic capacity and food availability on males’ reproductive success in field enclosures. Individuals from both tactics were released into enclosures with natural food or food supplementation to compete for mating opportunities. Males with high aerobic capacity sired overall on average 1.6 times more offspring than control males. Food supplementation increased males’ reproductive success, but, contrary to my prediction, it did not affect the reproductive success of tactics differently. I also tested the possibility that the benefit of high aerobic capacity is explained by that high aerobic capacity males succeeded better in direct competition over females. For this, I examined tactics’ success in male-male competition and females’ preference with two behavioural trials in laboratory. Females did not prefer high aerobic capacity males nor did these males win more male-male competition trials. My results confirmed that aerobic capacity can have notable effect on male fitness. Still, the mechanisms behind high aerobic capacity’s benefit for male reproductive success remained unclear, as food availability, sexual selection or survival did not explain it conclusively. Therefore, I conclude that high aerobic capacity’s fitness benefit could be less direct and intertwined with other traits and environmental conditions.
