Therefore, the aim of \nmy thesis was to examine, whether high aerobic capacity improves the reproductive \nsuccess of male bank voles. I also studied whether the possible reproductive success \nbenefit depends on environment\u2019s food availability. Finally, I tested whether high \naerobic capacity males succeed better in male-male competition for females and if \nfemales prefer high aerobic capacity males. The experiments were conducted using \ntwo bank vole tactics that were selectively bred in the laboratory. One tactic was \nselected for high aerobic capacity and the other was a control tactic, which was not \nselected for any trait. I studied the effects of high aerobic capacity and food \navailability on males\u2019 reproductive success in field enclosures. Individuals from \nboth tactics were released into enclosures with natural food or food \nsupplementation to compete for mating opportunities. Males with high aerobic \ncapacity sired overall on average 1.6 times more offspring than control males. Food \nsupplementation increased males\u2019 reproductive success, but, contrary to my \nprediction, it did not affect the reproductive success of tactics differently. I also \ntested the possibility that the benefit of high aerobic capacity is explained by that \nhigh aerobic capacity males succeeded better in direct competition over females. For \nthis, I examined tactics\u2019 success in male-male competition and females\u2019 preference \nwith two behavioural trials in laboratory. Females did not prefer high aerobic \ncapacity males nor did these males win more male-male competition trials. My \nresults confirmed that aerobic capacity can have notable effect on male fitness. Still, \nthe mechanisms behind high aerobic capacity\u2019s benefit for male reproductive \nsuccess remained unclear, as food availability, sexual selection or survival did not \nexplain it conclusively.
