Tutkielmassa k\u00e4ytettiin laadullista tutkimusotetta. Kiinnostuksen kohteena olivat nuorten kokemukset, joita pyrimme ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n. Tutkimusaineisto koostui kuudesta 16\u201319-vuotiaan (kolme tytt\u00f6\u00e4 ja kolme poikaa) lukio-opiskelijan puolistrukturoidusta teemahaastattelusta. Haastattelun teemat olivat itsetuntoon vaikuttaneet kokemukset sek\u00e4 kehonkuvaan vaikuttaneet kokemukset. Haastattelujen kestot vaihtelivat 32\u201346 minuutin v\u00e4lill\u00e4. Sanatarkasti litteroitua aineistoa kertyi yhteens\u00e4 86 sivua (fontti Times New Roman, fonttikoko 12, riviv\u00e4li 1). Aineisto analysoitiin k\u00e4ytt\u00e4en aineistol\u00e4ht\u00f6ist\u00e4 sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysia.\nItsetuntoon liittyvist\u00e4 kokemuksista muodostui viisi yl\u00e4luokkaa: 1.) kokemukset p\u00e4tevyydest\u00e4, 2.) liikuntaryhm\u00e4, 3.) vertailu, 4.) liikunnanopettaja ja 5.) toiminta liikuntatunnilla. Opiskelijoiden kokemuksista kehonkuvaan liittyen muodostui kuusi yl\u00e4luokkaa: 1.) liikuntaryhm\u00e4, 2.) vertailu, 3.) ulkoiset paineet, 4.) liikunnanopettaja, 5.) toiminta liikuntatunnilla ja 6.) ajatukset omasta kehosta. \nOnnistuminen ja osaaminen liikuntatunnilla vahvisti sek\u00e4 itsetuntoa ett\u00e4 kehonkuvaa. My\u00f6s liikunnanopettaja ja varsinkin h\u00e4nen antamansa palaute sek\u00e4 avoin keskustelu suorituskyvyn ja kehojen yksil\u00f6llisyydest\u00e4 koettiin itsetuntoa ja kehonkuvaa edist\u00e4vin\u00e4 tekij\u00f6in\u00e4. Erityisesti vertailu ja ryhm\u00e4paine koettiin itsetuntoa ja kehonkuvaa heikent\u00e4vin\u00e4 tekij\u00f6in\u00e4. Lis\u00e4ksi opiskelijoiden omilla ajatuksilla, kuten heikkouksien ja oman kehon hyv\u00e4ksymisell\u00e4 oli merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4 rooli siin\u00e4, millaisia kokemuksia opiskelijat liikuntatunneilla saivat. Tulosten perusteella liikuntatunneilla on hyv\u00e4 mahdollisuus antaa opiskelijoille itsetuntoa ja kehonkuvaa vahvistavia my\u00f6nteisi\u00e4 kokemuksia. Se kuitenkin vaatii liikunnanopettajilta tietoutta siit\u00e4, mitk\u00e4 tekij\u00e4t heikent\u00e4v\u00e4t ja mitk\u00e4 vahvistavat opiskelijan itsetuntoa sek\u00e4 kehonkuvaa ja mit\u00e4 ne ylip\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4\u00e4n tarkoittavat nuoren el\u00e4m\u00e4ss\u00e4. T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkielman tuloksia voi hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4 esimerkiksi liikunnanopettajat suunnitellessaan liikuntatunteja ja ollessaan oppilaiden tai opiskelijoiden kanssa vuorovaikutuksessa. Tulevaisuudessa voitaisiin tutkia, millaiseksi vastavalmistuneet liikunnanopettajat kokevat valmiudet tukea opiskelijoiden itsetuntoa ja my\u00f6nteist\u00e4 kehonkuvaa. The aim was to find out which factors strengthen, and which factors weaken self-esteem and body image. The goal was for the results to demonstrate how to develop physical education with respect to self-esteem and body image of the students. We used a qualitative approach in this study, because we were interested in understanding students\u2019 individual experiences. As for the research data, we used semi-structured thematic interviews. Six 16\u201319-year-old students (three girls and three boys) took part in our interviews. Themes in our interview were experiences of self-esteem in P.E. lessons and experiences of body image in P.E. lessons. The interviews took 32\u201346 minutes. Word by word the length of the data was 86 pages (font Times New Roman, size 12, line spacing 1). The data is analyzed using data-driven content analysis.\nThe experiences of self-esteem were divided into the following five major categories: 1.) perceived competence, 2.) significance of classmates, 3.) social comparison, 4.) significance of P.E. teacher and 5.) the contents of lessons. The six major categories in experiences of body image were: 1.) significance of classmates, 2.) social comparison, 3.) social pressures, 4.) significance of P.E. teacher, 5.) the contents of lessons and 6.) thoughts of own body.\nSucceeding in P.E. lessons strengthened both self-esteem and body image of the students. Also, the P.E. teacher was at great importance. Specifically, feedback and open discussion of individuality in performance and body were experienced as strengthening factors. The negative experiences were linked particularly to social comparison and peer pressure. Similarly, students\u2019 own thoughts about accepting their own body or weaknesses affected their experiences of ability and body. Based on the results, P.E. lessons are a good place to strengthen self-esteem and body image but also a place where they may fail to do so. This study provides knowledge regarding strengthening and weakening factors, as well as how P.E. teachers can identify how different factors affect students\u2019 self-esteem and body image differently.\nThere is a need for further study related to this subject. It could be useful to find out the readiness of graduated P.E. teachers to strengthen students\u2019 self-esteem and body image.
