Lis\u00e4ksi tutkimme, kuinka vanhemman temperamentin yhteydet nuoren temperamenttiin ja sen kehitykseen v\u00e4littyv\u00e4t vanhemman kasvatustyylien kautta. Tutkimus on osa laajempaa TIKAPUU-pitkitt\u00e4istutkimusta. Tutkimukseen osallistui 320 nuorta ja heid\u00e4n vanhempansa. Nuoret arvioivat temperamenttiaan (ulosp\u00e4insuuntautuneisuus, tahdonalainen itses\u00e4\u00e4tely, negatiivinen emotionaalisuus, kiinnostus muita ihmisi\u00e4 kohtaan) 6. ja 9. luokalla. Heid\u00e4n vanhempansa arvioivat omaa temperamenttiaan (ulosp\u00e4insuuntautuneisuus, tahdonalainen itses\u00e4\u00e4tely, negatiivinen emotionaalisuus, aistiherkkyys) ja kasvatustyylej\u00e4\u00e4n (l\u00e4mpimyys, psykologinen kontrolli, behavioraalinen kontrolli) nuorten ollessa 6. luokalla. Tutkimme nuoren temperamentin kehityst\u00e4 riippuvien otosten t-testill\u00e4 ja pysyvyyskorrelaatioilla (Pearson), kun taas vanhemman kasvatustyylien ja nuoren temperamentin v\u00e4lisi\u00e4 yhteyksi\u00e4 tutkittiin lineaarisella regressioanalyysilla. Vanhemman kasvatustyylien v\u00e4litt\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 vaikutusta vanhemman ja nuoren temperamentin v\u00e4lill\u00e4 tutkittiin mediaattorianalyysilla.\nTulokset osoittivat nuoren tahdonalaisen itses\u00e4\u00e4telyn ja negatiivisen emotionaalisuuden v\u00e4henev\u00e4n keskiarvotasolla 6.\u20139. luokan v\u00e4lill\u00e4. Lis\u00e4ksi nuoren temperamentin suhteellisen pysyvyyden havaittiin olevan kohtalaista kaikissa temperamentin ulottuvuuksissa. Vanhemman l\u00e4mpimyys ja behavioraalinen kontrolli olivat yhteydess\u00e4 nuoren temperamenttipiirteisiin ja niiden kehitykseen. Esimerkiksi vanhemman l\u00e4mpimyys oli yhteydess\u00e4 nuoren suurempaan kiinnostukseen muita ihmisi\u00e4 kohtaan 6. luokalla sek\u00e4 negatiivisen emotionaalisuuden v\u00e4henemiseen 6.\u20139. luokan v\u00e4lill\u00e4. Vanhemman behavioraalinen kontrolli oli puolestaan yhteydess\u00e4 nuoren v\u00e4h\u00e4isemp\u00e4\u00e4n negatiiviseen emotionaalisuuteen 6. luokalla. Vanhemman l\u00e4mpimyys ja behavioraalinen kontrolli v\u00e4littiv\u00e4t my\u00f6s useita vanhemman temperamentin ja nuoren temperamentin sek\u00e4 sen kehityksen v\u00e4lisi\u00e4 yhteyksi\u00e4. Erityisen t\u00e4rke\u00e4n\u00e4 havaintona oli, mit\u00e4 enemm\u00e4n vanhempi raportoi negatiivista emotionaalisuutta, sit\u00e4 v\u00e4hemm\u00e4n h\u00e4n osoitti l\u00e4mpimyytt\u00e4, joka edelleen oli yhteydess\u00e4 nuoren negatiivisen emotionaalisuuden lis\u00e4\u00e4ntymiseen. In addition, we investigated how parenting styles mediated the associations between parents\u2019 temperament and adolescents\u2019 temperament. This study is part of the larger STAIRWAY -research project. Our sample consisted of 320 adolescents and their parents. Adolescents assessed their own temperament (surgency, effortful control, negative emotionality, affiliativeness) in sixth and ninth grade. The parents assessed their own temperament (surgency, effortful control, negative emotionality, orienting sensitivity) and their parenting styles (parental warmth, psychological control, behavioral control) while adolescents were in sixth grade. We examined the mean-level change of adolescents\u2019 temperament by using paired samples t-test whereas Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the rank-order stability. We conducted the linear regression analysis to investigate whether the parenting styles are associated with adolescents\u2019 temperament and temperament change. Mediator analysis was used to examine the associations between adolescents\u2019 temperament, parents\u2019 temperament and parenting style.\nThe results showed that effortful control and negative emotionality decreased between sixth and ninth grades. In addition, rank-order stability was moderate in every temperament dimension. Parental warmth and behavioral control were associated with adolescents\u2019 temperament and temperament development. For example, parental warmth was related with a decrease in adolescents\u2019 negative emotionality between sixth and ninth grades and with a greater affiliativeness in sixth grade. Parents\u2019 behavioral control, in turn, was associated with adolescents\u2019 lower amount of negative emotionality in sixth grade. Moreover, parental warmth and behavioral control mediated several associations between parents\u2019 temperament and adolescents\u2019 temperament. Most importantly, the more parents reported negative emotionality, the more they showed parental warmth, which was further related to a greater negative emotionality of adolescents. All the other parents\u2019 temperament dimensions were associated with a greater amount of parental warmth and thereby with a decrease of adolescents\u2019 negative emotionality between sixth and ninth grades.\nThe study concludes that parents\u2019 temperament and parenting styles are related to adolescents\u2019 temperament and temperament change, although adolescents seek to gain independence from parents. These associations are important to identify in order to support adolescents towards a stable adulthood.
