Kehityst\u00e4 tutkittaessa on syyt\u00e4 tarkastella toimitusketjua kokonaisuudessaan ja siihen liittyvi\u00e4 tietoj\u00e4rjestelmi\u00e4, sill\u00e4 k\u00e4sitteen\u00e4 WMS on varsin uusi. Toimitusketjuun liittyvi\u00e4 tietoj\u00e4rjestelmi\u00e4 ovat muun muassa MRP, MRP-II ja ERP, joiden kehitys katsotaan alkaneen yksinkertaisista varastonhallintaj\u00e4rjes- telmist\u00e4 yli 60 vuotta sitten. Nyky\u00e4\u00e4n tehokas varastonhallinta vaatii oikein valitun ja hyvin optimoidun WMS-j\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4n, jotta varastom\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4 ja materiaalivirtaa voidaan seurata ja ohjata tehokkaasti. WMS-j\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4t tarjoavat paljon hy\u00f6tyj\u00e4 yritykselle, mutta niiden implementointiin ja k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n liittyy my\u00f6s haittoja. Varastoautomaatiota on ollut k\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4 jo useiden vuosikymmenien ajan, mutta kulutusk\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytymisen muuttuessa ja verkkokauppojen lis\u00e4\u00e4ntyess\u00e4 tehokasta varastonhallintaa ja sujuvaa materiaalivirtaa on miltei mahdotonta toteuttaa ilman varastoprosessien automatisoimista. Varastot ovat keskeinen osa toimitusketjua ja t\u00e4ten vaikuttavat merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti my\u00f6s asiakaspalvelun laatuun, joten niihin panostaminen on niin strategisesti kuin taloudellisesti j\u00e4rkev\u00e4\u00e4. Osa varastojen toiminnoista on todettu jo pitk\u00e4\u00e4n eritt\u00e4in ty\u00f6l\u00e4iksi ja aikaa vieviksi, siisp\u00e4 varasto-operaatioiden automatisointiin halutaan l\u00f6yt\u00e4\u00e4 mahdollisimman tehokkaita ratkaisuja. Yksinkertaisimmillaan automaatiovarasto on niin sanottu AS/RS-j\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4, joka voi toimia t\u00e4ysin automaattisesti tai ihmisty\u00f6ntekij\u00f6iden tukena. Tuoreimpana kehitysaskeleena niin valmistusteollisuudessa kuin varastonhallinnassa voidaan pit\u00e4\u00e4 nelj\u00e4tt\u00e4 teollisuuden vallankumousta eli Industry 4.0:aa. When studying the development, it is worth looking at the supply chain as a whole and related information systems, as the concept of WMS is quite new in this field. Supply chain information systems include MRP, MRP-II and ERP, whose development is considered to have started with simple inven- tory management systems more than 60 years ago. Today, efficient inventory management requires a properly selected and well-optimized WMS system to effectively monitor and control inventory volume and material flow. WMS sys- tems offer many benefits to the company, but there are also disadvantages asso- ciated with their implementation and use. Warehouse automation has been in use for several decades, but with changing consumer behavior and increasing e- commerce, efficient inventory management and a smooth material flow is al- most impossible to implement without automating warehouse processes. Warehouses are a key part of the supply chain and thus also have a significant impact on the quality of customer service, so investing in them makes both stra- tegic and financial sense. Some of the warehouse operations have long been found to be very laborious and time-consuming. Therefore, the aim is to find the most efficient solutions for the automation of warehouse operations. At its simplest, an automation warehouse is a so-called AS / RS system that can oper- ate fully automatically or in support of human workers. The fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) can be considered the most recent development in both manufacturing and warehouse management.
