T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, miten vuoden kest\u00e4nyt liikunta- ja kognitiivinen harjoittelu vaikuttavat kasvutekij\u00f6ihin i\u00e4kk\u00e4ill\u00e4 henkil\u00f6ill\u00e4 verrattuna pelkk\u00e4\u00e4n liikuntaharjoitteluun. Lis\u00e4ksi selvitet\u00e4\u00e4n, ovatko liikunnan ja kognitiivisen harjoittelun aiheuttamat muutokset kasvutekij\u00f6iden pitoisuuksissa yhteydess\u00e4 lihasvoiman tai toiminnanohjauksen muutoksiin.\nTutkielma perustuu Promoting safe walking among older people -tutkimuksen (PASSWORD) aineistoon. PASSWORD-tutkimus on satunnaistettu kontrolloitu koe, johon rekrytoitiin v\u00e4est\u00f6rekisterist\u00e4 satunnaisotannalla jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4l\u00e4isi\u00e4 kotona asuvia, 70\u201385-vuotiaita miehi\u00e4 (n=126) ja naisia (n=188), jotka eiv\u00e4t liikkuneet vallitsevien liikuntasuositusten mukaisesti. BDNF-, proBDNF- ja IGF\u20131-pitoisuudet mitattiin laskimoverin\u00e4yttein\u00e4 paastotilassa olevilta tutkittavilta aamulla kello 8\u201310 v\u00e4lisen\u00e4 aikana. Maksimaalinen isometrinen polven ojennusvoima mitattiin voimadynamometrill\u00e4 (Good Strength, Metitur Ltd, Palokka, Suomi). Alaraajojen ojentajien voimantuottoteho mitattiin Nottingham Power Rig -laitteella. Tilastolliset analyysit perustuivat vastemuuttujien alku- ja loppumittausdataan. Analyysimenetelmin\u00e4 olivat toistomittausten varianssianalyysi ja Pearsonin korrelaatiokerroin. \nLiikunta- ja kognitiivinen harjoittelu (LIIKUKO) ei ollut tehokkaampaa kuin pelkk\u00e4 liikuntaharjoittelu (LIIKU) kasvattamaan kasvutekij\u00f6iden pitoisuuksia. BDNF-pitoisuus kuitenkin kasvoi molemmissa ryhmiss\u00e4 tilastollisesti merkitsev\u00e4sti (p<0.001). Molempien ryhmien polven ojennusvoiman, voimantuottotehon ja toiminnanohjauksen tulokset paranivat tutkimuksen aikana (p<0.001). Stroopin v\u00e4ritestin tulos parani LIIKUKO-ryhm\u00e4ss\u00e4 enemm\u00e4n kuin LIIKU-ryhm\u00e4ss\u00e4 (p<0.05). Kasvutekij\u00f6iden ja lihasvoiman, voimantuottotehon ja toiminnanohjauksen muutosten v\u00e4lill\u00e4 ei ollut tilastollisesti merkitsev\u00e4\u00e4 yhteytt\u00e4.\nTutkielman tulosten perusteella yhdistetty liikunta- ja kognitiivinen harjoittelu ei ole tehokkaampi tapa lis\u00e4t\u00e4 kasvutekij\u00f6iden pitoisuuksia pelkk\u00e4\u00e4n liikuntaharjoitteluun verrattuna. Tulokset kuitenkin viittasivat siihen, ett\u00e4 liikuntaharjoittelulla voidaan nostaa BDNF-pitoisuuksia. The information for the effects of physical and cognitive training on growth factors is still limited. The aim of this study is to determine whether combined physical and cognitive training affect growth factor concentrations more than physical training along among 70\u2013 to 85\u2013year-old older adults during a one-year intervention. In addition, the study investigates whether the changes in growth factor concentrations are associated with changes in muscle strength or executive functioning.\nThe study is based on the data of Promoting safe walking among older people \u2013study (PASSWORD). The PASSWORD-study is a randomized controlled trial. Community-dwelling men (n=126) and women (n=188) aged 70 to 85 years old living in Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4 who did not follow the prevailing physical activity recommendations were recruited from the Finnish National Registry. BDNF, proBDNF and IGF-1 concentrations were measured as venous blood samples from fasted subjects in the morning between 8 and 10 a.m. The maximum isometric knee extension force was measured with a force dynamometer (Good Strength, Metitur Ltd, Palokka, Finland). Leg extensor muscle power was measured with Nottingham Power Rig. Training effects on growth factor concentrations were analysed with repeated measures ANOVA. The association of changes in growth factor concentrations, muscle strength and executive functioning were measured with Pearson\u2019s correlation coefficient.\nCombined physical and cognitive training (LIIKUKO) was not more effective than physical training (LIIKU) alone to increase the growth factor concentrations. However, BDNF concentrations increased in both groups (p<0.001). The knee extension force, leg extensor muscle power and cognitive functioning improved in both groups (p<0.001). The result of the Stroop color test improved more in the LIIKUKO group than in the LIIKU group (p<0.05). There was no statistically significant association between the changes in growth factor concentrations, muscle strength and executive functioning.\nBased on this study, combined physical and cognitive training is not a more effective way to increase growth factor concentrations than physical training alone. However, the results suggested that physical training can increase BDNF concentrations.
