Taustakirjallisuudessa perehdytään Englannin kielen globaaliin asemaan akateemisessa maailmassa ja myös Suomessa, sekä englannin kielen asemaan vaikuttaviin osa-alueisiin, kuten esimerkiksi kansainvälistymisen mahdolliset motivaatiot ja oppilaitosten linjaukset. Tilastotieteen tekniikoiden avulla pyritään kuvaamaan valittua otosta, jossa tarkastellaan vastaajien itsearviointia omasta kielitaidosta, vastausten integratiivista ja instrumentaalista motivaatiota englannin kielen oppimiseen, sekä mahdollisia positiivisesti vaikuttavia tekijöitä kielen oppimiseen oppilaitoksen ja oman elämän osalta. Kaikkien kategorioiden vastaukset käydään läpi tilastollisen merkityksen näkökulmasta.
