description Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastellaan yhden ulkomailta Suomeen palanneen suomalaisen lähetyslapsen eli kolmannen kulttuurin kasvatin (TCK) vuorovaikutusrepertuaarin kehittymistä hänen sopeutuessaan suomalaiseen koulukulttuuriin. The present study is a case study on the communicative repertoire of a Finnish returnee and third culture kid (TCK) and, more specifically, her process of repertoire construction as she adapts to the Finnish primary school context after living abroad in a multicultural ELF setting and attending an English-medium school there. The theoretical framework is based on a conception of language as a means of communication and as a repertoire that reflects all the contexts, past and present, that an individual has lived in and encountered. All these settings and their patterns of socialisation have influenced the resources that form the individual's communicative repertoire, which in turn changes and is reconstructed as new sources of socialisation appear. The purpose of this study was to discover how the returnee constructs her communicative repertoire in her process of socialisation across contexts. Another point of interest was what English means to the returnee and how she views Finnish EFL classes in the light of her experiences of having lived in an ELF context and having studied in English there. The data consists of two separate interviews with the returnee both conducted after her repatriation during her primary school years in Finland, one in grade four in 2011 and the second in sixth grade in 2013. The research maps out the three different school contexts of the returnee (i.e., the international school and two different Finnish schools) and the resources she uses in the process of repertoire construction: linguistic, metapragmatic, semiotic, interpersonal, and cultural, intercultural and metacultural resources. The findings suggest the returnee is an active participant in the socialisation process and using (and modifying) her resources she, for example, observes, compares, judges, adapts to, and resists the contexts she encounters.
