Tutkimus toteutettiin sähköisen kyselylomakkeen avulla, joka koostui 23 strukturoidusta tai avoimesta kysymyksestä. Kysely jaettiin LIITO Ry:n jäsenille sähköpostilistan kautta syksyllä 2020 ja alkuvuodesta 2021. Kyselyyn vastasi 123 yläkoulun ja toisen asteen liikunnanopettajaa, joista 63 prosenttia oli naisia. Aineisto analysoitiin ristiintaulukoinnin, x2-testin sekä aineistolähtöisen sisällönanalyysin avulla. Tulosten mukaan 76 prosenttia vastaajista opetti kamppailulajeja osana koululiikuntaa. Kamppailulajien opetus oli yleisintä osana yläkoulun tai lukion pakollisia ja valinnaisia liikuntakursseja. Omana kurssina kamppailulajeja opetettiin vain vähän (4%). Yleisimmin opetettuja lajeja olivat nyrkkeily tai kuntonyrkkeily, paini sekä judo. Taustatekijöistä opettajan kokemus kamppailulajien riittävästä osaamisesta ja tarvittavien tilojen sekä välineiden saatavuus olivat yhteydessä siihen, että kamppailulajeja opetettiin liikuntatunneilla. Opettajista 53 prosenttia koki kamppailulajien sopivan koululiikuntaan sellaisenaan. Loput 47 prosenttia vastasivat niiden sopivan koululiikuntaan sovellettuna. Opettajat perustelivat kamppailulajien sopivuutta koululiikuntaan fyysisen ja sosiaalisen toimintakyvyn kehittymisellä, liikuntatuntien sisältöjen monipuolistamisella sekä mahdollisilla hyödyillä psyykkiseen toimintakykyyn. Opettajien mukaan oppilaiden suhtautuminen kamppailulajeihin oli ollut pääosin positiivista tai neutraalia. Keskeisimmät syyt siihen, ettei kamppailulajeja opetettu olivat opettajien mukaan heikko koettu osaaminen kamppailulajeista (47%), sekä tilojen ja välineiden puute (17%). Myös koronapandemia oli opettajien mukaan vaikuttanut siihen, ettei lähikontaktilajeja opetettu koululiikunnassa. Kamppailulajien opetusta voitaisiin helpottaa lisäkoulutuksella tai sisällyttämällä niitä liikunnanopettajien opintoihin. The purpose of this master's study was to find out the prevalence of teaching martial arts and the factors influencing it in physical education, in secondary school, high school and vocational school. We also seek to find out teachers' opinions about martial arts and their suitability for PE. The study was conducted using a web-questionnaire consisting of 23 structured or open-ended questions. The survey was sent to members of LIITO ry through an e-mail list at the end of 2020 and in early 2021. A total of 123 teachers responded to the survey, and 63 percent of them were women. The data was analyzed using cross-tabulation, x2-test and data-driven content analysis. According to the results, 76 percent of respondents taught martial arts in PE. The teaching of martial arts was most common as part of compulsory and optional PE -courses in secondary school or high school. Only few teachers mentioned to teach them as individual courses (4%). The most common sports were boxing or fitness boxing, wrestling, and judo. Among the background factors, the teacher's perceived knowledge of martial arts, and the availability of equipment and facilities suitable for teaching martial arts, had a statistically significant connection with the teaching of martial arts in PE. Fifty-three percent of teachers felt that martial arts were suitable for physical education as such. The remaining 47 percent answered that they were suitable to PE when modified. The suitability of martial arts for physical education was justified by the development of physical and social performance, the diversification of PE and the potential benefits on mental functioning. According to the teachers, the students’ attitudes towards martial arts was mainly positive or neutral. Of the teachers who did not teach martial arts, 47 percent mentioned the inadequacy of their own skills, and 17 percent the lack of facilities and equipment, as the reason. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic were also mentioned in the responses as the reason why such close contact sports were not taught in physical education. The teaching of martial arts could be facilitated by additional studies or by including them in the studies of physical education teachers.
