Yhteenveto:The aim of the study is to investigate management of crew operations in airline industry. The focus is strongly on the issues of productivity, cost-effectiveness and intrapreneurship. Pilot's educational background and their additional work tasks are analyzed. Some tools and models to measure and analyze performance are developed. The empirical data come from Finnair in 1980's and 1990's. The conceptual part of the study portrays earlier writings on commercial aviation. By analyzing the key concepts in the context of airline industry, the litterature review ends up with a summary of the related concepts. Empirically the study is based on mailed questionaires. The respondent represent for management, supervisors and pilots. The results offer insights of productivity, strategy, task structures, personnel structures, trade union agreements, capabilities and competencies.
