The objective was to investigate what kind of body image
experiences depressed people have, and whether there was any change between pre-, post- and
follow-up measurements. The participants (n = 15) were women aged 20-64 (mean 38) diagnosed
with depression. They participated in a dance movement therapy intervention that lasted 10 weeks
and consisted of two 75 minutes sessions per week. The group leaders were trained dance movement
therapists. Subjects also received treatment as usual during the study. Body image responses of the
subjects were examined by creating theme categories from written responses at different points of
measurement. The answers were studied based on the following questions: “How do you perceive
your body and its appearances?”, “What is it like for you to take physical action?”, “What is the basic
mood like in your body when you are by yourself?” and “What is important for you in your body?”.
Each question was classified separately. Six themes were formed in the perceived body: fatigue and
tension, positive and negative appearances, physicality and action, positive essence, and detachment.
Experiences of fatigue and tension, negative appearance, and detachment decreased, even
disappeared, while descriptions of positive essence increased in follow-up measurement. There were
four thematic categories for physical activity: fatigue and anxiety, physical limitations, neutral and
positive expressions, and sociality, awareness, and observation. From these, neutral and positive
expressions increased. The categories of basic mood in the body while being by themselves were also
fatigue and anxiety, neutral and positive expressions, detachment and awareness, and pain. Mentions
of fatigue and anxiety disappeared in the follow-up measurement and positive expressions increased.
The thematic categories of perceived important body features differed from the others and consisted
of four: the desire for change, the change of values, the knowledge of the body, and the description
of important things. Hopes for change diminished and values changed during the intervention. The
most significant findings in this study were a reduction in feelings of fatigue and anxiety, an increase
in positive experiences, and the experiences of detachment disappeared. Based on this study, groupbased dance movement therapy improves the body image of depressed people. The answers also
indicate a reduction in symptoms of depression.
