Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on löytää pelien digitaaliseen jakeluun liittyvää tutkimusta samalla kartoittaen mitä ja miten näissä tutkimuksissa on tutkittu, löytää näitä tutkimuksia yhdistäviä teemoja ja tunnistaa mitä ei ole tutkittu ja mitä olisi syytä tutkia enemmän. Tutkielma on toteutettu systemaattisena kirjallisuuskartoituksena, jossa kartoitetaan aikaisemmin tehtyä tutkimusta ja muodostetaan siitä yleiskuva sekä tätä kuvaa havainnollistavat kartoitukset. Pelien digitaalisesta jakelusta on tehty varsin vähän tutkimusta. Vaikuttaa siltä, että kiinnostus tutkia pelien digitaalista jakelua on nousussa ja tutkimuksia julkaistaan pääosin konferensseissa. Selvästi suosituin tutkimusteema on käyttäjien toiminnan tutkiminen ja yleisimpiä tutkimusmenetelmiä suurten datamäärien analysointi sekä kyselytutkimus. Lisää tutkimusta aiheesta kaivattaisiin lähes joka näkökulmasta, mutta erityisesti pelien digitaalisen jakelun alustojen välisestä kilpailusta, digitaalisen jakelun historiallisesta kehityksestä sekä siitä, miten pelien helpompi saavutettavuus on vaikuttanut pelaajiin. Myös kokonaan puuttuvien tutkimustyyppien tutkimuksille olisi tarvetta, erityisesti filosofisille julkaisuille ja kokemusjulkaisuille. The popularity of digital games has been on the rise over the last few years and consequently the significance of the game industry has increased. At the same time digital distribution has emerged as the most common way of ac-quiring digital games. The objectives of this thesis were to find research con-cerning the digital distribution of games and to map out that research, identi-fying what and how has been researched, what are the themes in the research, what has not been studied, and what should be studied more. This thesis is carried out as a systematic mapping study that maps out earlier research to give a general view of the studied issue and mapping of studies to visualize the research area. There is relatively little research about the digital distribu-tion of games. It seems that research interest towards studying the digital dis-tribution of games is on the rise and research about it is published mainly in conferences. Clearly the most popular research theme was studying the users of the digital distribution of games, and the most common research methods were analysing large amounts of data and survey study. More research on every aspect of the topic is needed, but especially research is needed about the competition between digital distribution platforms, the historical evolution of the digital distribution of games, and how easier access to different games has affected the players of digital games. In addition research of the research types that are missing should be conducted, most importantly philosophical papers and experience papers.
