Kulttuurien tuntemus ja kulttuurien v\u00e4linen viestint\u00e4 ovat yh\u00e4 t\u00e4rke\u00e4mm\u00e4ss\u00e4 roolissa opetussuunnitelmissa ja sen my\u00f6t\u00e4 my\u00f6s kielten opetuksessa. Oppikirjoilla puolestaan on aina ollut keskeinen osa kielten opetuksessa ja siksi niill\u00e4 onkin suuri vaikutusvalta oppilaisiin ja siihen tietoon, mit\u00e4 he kohdekulttuureista omaksuvat. \n Tutkin maisterintutkielmassani kulttuuriin liittyvi\u00e4 viittauksia oppikirjasarjoissa Go for it! ja On the Go. Tutkimus keskittyi kirjasarjojen tekstikirjoihin ja metodina tutkimuksessa k\u00e4ytettiin sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysia. Jokainen kirja k\u00e4ytiin j\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4llisesti l\u00e4pi, ja l\u00f6yd\u00f6kset kategorisoitiin k\u00e4ytt\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 Hofsteden (2005), Byramin (1993) ja Eurooppalaisen kielitaidon viitekehyksen (2001) kriteerien pohjalta luomaani luokittelua. Analyysiss\u00e4 keskityttiin selvitt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n mitk\u00e4 englanninkieliset maat huomioidaan oppikirjoissa, ja saavatko tietyt maat enemm\u00e4n huomiota kuin toiset. Huomioon otettiin my\u00f6s viittaukset englannin k\u00e4yt\u00f6st\u00e4 lingua francana.\n T\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa englanninkielisiksi maiksi laskettiin maat, jotka kuuluvat Kachrun (1982) mallin sis\u00e4piiriin, eli Yhdysvallat, Englanti, Skotlanti, Irlanti, Wales, Australia, Kanada ja Uusi-Seelanti. Tutkimukset tulokset osoittavat, ett\u00e4 molemmat oppikirjat esitteliv\u00e4t monipuolisesti englanninkielisi\u00e4 maita, mutta Yhdysvallat ja Englanti olivat keskeisemm\u00e4ss\u00e4 asemassa kuin muut maat. Oli my\u00f6s tyypillist\u00e4, ett\u00e4 viitaukset, jotka liittyiv\u00e4t Kanadaan, Uuteen-Seelantiin ja Australiaan olivat yksipuoleisempia.
